hello, how do i get push notifications? evrything is allowed but no push yet. must are Android apps. thank you
Have you installed microG? I believe that is needed to enable notifications for Android apps.
Not for all. For me WA, Viber and Telegram work without MicroG.
But I assume, you get the notification only if you open those apps? Not in background?
I allowed them in the background. So no need for them to be open for notifications.
I believe it depends on how the application handles push notifications. Those that have their own system will work without microG, but those that rely on Google services will not.
In theory, the centralised service should improve battery life because there are fewer connections being kept open and fewer applications holding connections open.
I’m running a Matrix client together with ntfy.sh to get unified push chat notifications even if the client isn’t running. However, you need to allow Notify to run in the background.
But can WA and Telegramm run in background? It is really new to me. With some telegram forkt its possible to run in background, but WA? Really?
I was using WhatsApp on an XA2 with Sailfish for about half a year, before I installed microG. All that was needed to reliably get notifications, was to enable the toggle “Allow background services to start on bootup” in Settings.
Is there any native ntfy client (i didn’t find any), or are you using the shell version (is it working)? Thanks a lot.
There’s a native Gotifish app → Gotifish — SailfishOS:Chum, a Sailfish OS software repository by the community
For Android apps (there aren’t many—mainly FluffyChat. I’m secretly hoping Sailtrix gets back on track. It still mixes up the rooms too much for me), I use Ntfy from F-Droid
So far, I’ve always managed to avoid MicroG
Besides, I try very hard to use native apps…
I’m using the Android-based ntfy application running with background permissions. The matrix client will detect the unified push endpoint automagically and will register itself to receive push notifications via ntfy service. A native SailfishOS ntfy might be possible but I’m not sure if registration will work from the Android side as this eventually uses intents/broadcasts so your best bet is to use the APK.
