High end device with Sailfish?

Hi
If alternative is to buy new Iphone 17 pro max type of device or some sailfish operated device is there an alternative available and how to get one?

Display need to big with excellent performance (device used all the time to work issue and bigger display is better), high end cameras etc. Can we create alternative with this Sailfish OS to compete high end devices?

There are some ports for “higher end” xperia devices than the officially suppported but don’t expect them to be at the level of iphones.

They will also include port shortcomings and all the shortcomings that come with SFOS.

Yes and Sony is leaving Europe now.

I believe we have high interest in Europe for alternative for non Chinese or US devices and nothing available?

We should create one soonest.

Well Sailfish will never be as high end as an iPhone. Does not need to either. The system is satisfied with small resources, just like many linux systems. And Linux mostly runs well on older and weaker hardware. The camera will never be super good. But works. Something like a Fairphone 4 - 6 will be higher end enough for SailfishOS.

Marketing works well if no one questions the iPhone as high-end.

How to even define high end? Does it mean high price or high performance?

If works well and is robust in use is enough for me. Price can be lower also.

Fairphone is interesting but 6 is with 6,3 inch display. Would like to get 6,9 inch good quality display.
I have been also wondering why linux laptops are not sold as new ones. Seems to be de facto that you need to buy used laptop to get Linux device. Very strange to understand why laptop need to be first with Windows for few years in order to get Linux running in device

Alternative FOSS OSs have always lagged behind hardware development because they’re not in bed with manufacturers. That is unlikely to change. If you need “high end” then this is not for you.

There are multiple vendors who do sell laptops with pre-installed Linux:

Just some examples

Regarding laptops, there are also major brands like Lenovo that (at least in some markets) sell laptops wityh pre-loaded Linux. For instance Lenovo US offers both Ubuntu and Fedora as options, with a ‘discount’ of 140 USD on the basic configuration that has Win 11 Home.

Thats the point. Even my Oneplus 6 runs smooth and fluent with just SailfishOS. Not heigh end but pretty fast. Very good performance.

Sony will continue selling through online channels in Europe while leaving retail channels.

Very good - happy Linux can be bought also as new ones. Will buy one soon. Oneplus 13 - could you set up Sailfish on it?

Basically the question is - do I have to use old phone model in order to use Sailfish?

Kind off, yes. Because they need to be ported and this starts on older android versions mostly. Here you can look for some good examples for community devices … Poll: The most popular SailfishOS Community Ports … Or the official jolla shop for sony devices with license and android support.

But SailfishOS is still for people who are more into digital privacy then into feature rich high end phones.

@kjl I recently bought a brandnew linux laptop (Tuxedo). It’s a Tongfang. You can also buy one at ‘laptopwithlinux’ and choose what specs you want.

Ok understand. I am very much thinking digital privacy and in Europe we should target to change this situation where two US giants control everything, not to even continue with social media where situation is same. It just seems very difficult if you should do it only with old devices. Something should change and in current situation one would think demand could be bigger for alternatives.

Something should change, but your average person doesn’t really care. Especially if it would require them to move away from their current ecosystem, to which they are strongly locked in, by design, by the vendors. If it takes too much effort and isn’t easy, they’ll keep doing what they are doing now.

There is close to zero interest in alternatives to iOS and Android both in Europe and everywhere else in the world.

Only a handful of political activists, haters of Americans and tech nerds have such an interest.
That is about zero percent of all phone users.
