[Help request] How to install the latest Linux apps (Plasma Mobile or others)

Hello everyone,

I would like to be able to install recent apps, particularly those from the Plasma Mobile ecosystem.

I have tried via the terminal, but whilst the apps are available, the versions are outdated and poorly managed in Jolla OS.

Would it be possible to update and expand the official repository? Is it possible to add repositories, and if so, how should I go about it?

Personally, I would prefer to use this option rather than having to install Android apps.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

You cant. I think plasma mobile apps require a more up to date waylans/compositor.

Apart from what is enabled by the experimental newer Qt 5.15 and/or 6 builds, this really is not a thing.
(use search and you shall find)

No idea where you are pulling that elisa from, it’s not available in any base repos.

That’s Sailfish OS.

Is that impossible for a so-called Linux system? That’s a shame, no?

Seems to be available from chum using qt5.15, yeah those are experimental, the best from ‘desktop’ apps you can get is wireshark or try to use Containers and run desktop apps there (no idea on current state)

The problem isn’t linux per se. Its the graphics stack that is old and bitrotted. There are some patches to update the compositor but i don’t think they have been merged or reviewed yet.

Its up to jolla to review and accept.

‘So-called’ linux system has old wayland, you are free to improve it and port xwayland, gnome etc to it, lipstick is open source, so stop complaining and start contributing

I just opened a terminal and tried to install an app that I thought might be compatible; Elisa is just one example among many (see the screenshot in my original post)

PS : I apologize for the naming error

I doubt that are many modern linux apps that need xwayland nowadays.

So the only thing needed is a modern compositor.

Since it is found you apparently already have some additional repo added. No idea what that is. If it is not a SFOS-specific repo it is basically guaranteed to not work, as per above.

Should install from chum-gui, just like angelfish, getting newer qt apps to work was/is a huge undertaking by the community, expecting 30+ years of ‘linux’ apps to work just because linux, ehh well, android is linux good luck (but seriously, 99% of desktop apps are just unusable on phone, use Containers to see for yourself, while it would be cool to be able to run all gnome/kde and legacy X apps, it’s kinda pointless as you still have to adapt their UI to be usable(nevermind recompiling for aarch64))

Modern or not, plenty of linux apps work only with xwayland, so if someone comes with: I was told it’s linux, yeah well, oh well

TBH i cant think of much that havent been ported to the latest versions of the toolkits except some weird beard stuff but yeah.

Anyway.

If asking for help or making a request for future versions amounts to whining, so be it: stay in your elitist bubble.

As an average user—meaning I don’t have any special technical skills—this isn’t, unfortunately, the first time I’ve come across this kind of comment here

Just to update the xdg-shell support was just merged today in SFOS so things will be probably better for running whatever app you want. (depending on what wl-protocols the apps rely on)

This isn’t an elitist comment, just stating facts, community members spent months to bring you the ability to run elisa or angelfish, instead of complaining it’s not up-to-date to your standards you should be asking how to help with future development/improvements, but you do you (for me personally you can go complain on android official forum you heard android is linux but your favourite linux apps don’t work wth, why not complain to gnome why kapps are not working or vice versa)

I don’t even know how to do it (see my first post)

But apparently you did it none the less.

I was inclined to agree with you that calling it complaining was over-the-top, but with also borderline demanding to not have to care or put in work, my sympathy is lost.

I’m not looking to install traditional desktop apps, just certain ones designed for mobile devices, such as these, for example: Applications - Plasma Mobile (Please take another look at my first post)

Most of them have a high chance of working thanks to community work on qt6, still you won’t get anywhere here complaining about them being out of date for your liking, take it or leave it (or learn how to contribute and be the change you blah blah)
