Sorry @attah, but I don’t quite understand either.?! I have an NFC card reader, the one recommended by my Gov’t of choice. I installed the android app for said reader on my Sony 10iii. I am able to use it with my Gov’t of choice identity documents. Now, said app IS very linux friendly, so maybe an exception, but my ‘Reinersct’ reader works with sailfish.
But not with an Android app presumably? How is it connected?
No, that’s the point. The android app on the device worked. You have to go through a process (gov’t, eh) between desktop and adroid device and I went through the song and dance with SFOS, or so I thought I’ll go and check to see if I’m not just hallucinating.
But what is the function? Can you explain how the setup works?
The payment method (I guess) we are discussing should be kinda like this, with or without terminal.
ABR Service.
Yeah, it was on SFOS. It’s an app called ‘AusweisApp2’ and I managed to follow the directions to get it authorized via the desktop app and the NFC reader. I actually don’t have any other phones BUT SFOS phones (I have one Android tablet that I rarely use).
I have to admit, I set it up just to see if it could be done. It’s a gov’t ID app thing where you can do interactive identity validation with a card and the reader. Frankly, I avoid using it. If you ACTUALLY interact with any Gov’t agency in Germany, it’s preferable to use a FAX.
Oh, got it now. I though it was a direct payment/pos system or something like that!
Ah, I believe (emphasis!) that the Android app just get’s validated and the card reader was just used on the PC. Like I said, I don’t really use it often (barely at all) and It looks like the key reader was used on the PC, NOT on the phone. I did test the reader with the phone and most of those tests where with @slava 's tools I now see … I wanted to dive into that some more, but got held up (starting a business).
Soo, I’m spreading FUD with the claim that the reader and the android app work together directly. I’d have to go through the process again to see just exactly works.
Yes l know, that’s actually one reason to buy the Xperia 10 V brand new from an official outlet, and then wait 18-24 months for SFOS support. So, whether it’s Xperia 10 IV or 10 V, l think l’ll have to use Android anyway. Therefore l’m considering just etting Volla Phone 22 / X23 running Volla OS and leaving it at that. I could try Punkt MC02, but it’s slightly beyond my price point and if the phone is to last 10 years, the subscription model will have me paying the phone price once over. My idea was to have a long term supported phone with a reasonable level of security for as long as possible. So … it has to be Volla phone really. Also there seems to be a bit of tension here, don’t take it the wrong way but l’ve seen a few other conversations some “testy” devs (= regulars) have with other newcomers on here, l don’t think l will be happy trying to get answers (inevitable when l get deeper into SFOS after installing it) when the same conversation is forced on the unsuspecting seeker e.g. 1. We’re trying to HELP you, you IDIOT 2. Want it? Make it YOURSELF 3. Maybe this software isn’t right for you, GO to some other forum 4. You don’t understand, therefore l won’t tell, l don’t have to tell, so l won’t, because you don’t, so l won’t, l won’t explain to you, l won’t l won’t! 5. Response: 45901 Likes from regs beholden to that reg. Plus there’s the nomenclature. Who knows what Sailfish is really called? I don’t think anybody knows it’s name. I sometimes think it’s Sailfish X so l’ll call it that. Or Sailfish OS. Or both. I don’t know.
Sorry guys, it’s been nice mostly but l will be betting against the survival of SFOS, there lacks the professional serenity and joie de vivre, l sense a broken tribe, ennui outside of acceptable parameters. Prove me wrong, l won’t be upset, l’ll be happy either way I’ll check in on you in a few months to see if you’re still there. All the best!
Good luck with your search.
Don’t worry about Sailfish. It survived many times the last 10+ years already with all the odds being against it

When Marc Dillon left Jolla, there was no adequate successor. The spirit of Jolla then left the freelance developers and enthusiastic users.
When Rostelcom separated, Sailfish OS finally cut itself off from supply…
Luckily, there are alternatives with functioning communities!

Ooh, howe I wish we had those TJC down votes back.
That’s exactly my case. I’ve had my own domain since 15 years. Not self hosted, but different commercial hosts hosted. So really, I have no idea how google mail works today. But still, the Sailfish app works as it should.
Coming in acting like you are the first user to ever consider Sailfish (just imagine if everyone started such a thread), having done no apparent research, putting own guesses/wishes before facts, and then quickly proceeding to reading in things that were not said (despite being told to re-read) does not exactly set you up for success.
I don’t think expecting a different outcome given the circumstances is really reasonable. Welcome back when you find out that/why there are basically no non-developer daily-drivers of the other mobile Linuxes.
@poetaster, you missed to mention in all your posts WRT this “NFC reader” that it is USB-attached. Inside AlienDalvik (“AAS”) / Waydroid Bluetooth and NFC of the device are not visible / accessible, but that may be different for USB-attached devices (I am not sure about that, though).
P.S.: Oh, I see you became less confident in your statements later on.
On the Xperia 10 III the AusweisApp2 looks like this. Roughly translated: “For the communication with the ID-document the standard NFC is necessary. This is not available on your device.”
It will survive, and maybe flourish with a limited userbase, but a lively one
Yes, I couldn’t remember how far I had gone Too many parallel tasks. I have to find my USB-A - C adapter and give it a try again. I’ll have to repeat my experiments when I find a bit of time…
Won’t do more than survive without stable userbase, and sailfish most definetly need more new users for that. Escpesially since lot of old users seems to not be able to process how they would need to pay for the software (more than 50e/phone) in such a niche category.
Someone said that this dude came in here without any apparent research etc. Bro no one will even know sailfish without research, but as for newcomers you can’t expect them to understand everything from documents and scattered information from forums. Yes there is search but you have to know what to search to find stuff, and even then it’s not easy to comprehend a lot of stuff unless you are developer of some sort.
Me for myself just ordered used xperia 10 iii, and as soon as it comes I’ll install sailfish for the first time. I’m doing it out of principle to have any control whether or not I’ll ever even use that control, no matter the obstacles. I expect to find a lot of stuff for various problems in the forums when I crash into them, and the limitations like nfc->android apps are good thing to know beforehand. There is clearly these limitations that you can expect to not work in foreseen future, and I think there should be stickies for those instead of newcomers having to ask them to get shit on if they dont understand your answer right away. And yes, Crassy took the shitting on the next level but there was a lot of passive aggressivity or something in the exchange above it, concluded in “admire of patience” for the one giving away somewhat vague answers instead of just explaining well from the beginning.
Old thread but as a newcomer this has been pretty usefull and relvant, so I bump it happily.
