Feedback on Jolla C2

NikosAlexandris didn’t get the same phone back. He got a new one sent to him, long before the original one arrived to Jolla.
He’s the one and only exception, if you ask me.

Nice to see that it works fine for you,

I received the C2 this morning and spend some time setting it up.
If this is what the community deserves then I’m wondering what we did wrong

I have the original Jolla phone somewhere and the main difference between the 2 devices is that the og Jolla phone was a complete product, being held back by the hardware. The C2 is held back by hardware and software, but this is what we deserve.

I’m trying to find out how to return the phone. Spending money on this was just not worth it.

The original phone was also held back by software, checkout the release notes of the first five releases. The OS is much more matured (but still contans bugs).

I had hope more had changed in the last few years but stating “Experience Sailfish OS as it’s meant to be” should at least include that the stock apps don’t freeze up or crash (have seen both happening with the media and settings apps).

“This reference device showcases the best of Sailfish OS, with a sleek design, powerful performance, and exclusive access to the latest features and upgrades.”. I’m not convinced it has powerful performance but that is up for debate of course. In my opinion it has not which for me is a reason to return it.

Update your Jolla C2 from SailfishOS 5.0.0.5 to 5.0.0.21 and let it idle for an hour after the final reboot after updating: It should behave much better then.

P.S.: In general, because some resource-intensive background processes are started after each SailfishOS update, it is advisable to let the device just sit there for a while and finish these jobs.

Good tip! but I was referring to the experience after the update. after it has settled in.

As some hundred other C2 users have not reported this, I suggest to open a ticket at Jolla’s ZENdesk instance to get a replacement device (probably opening a ticket there is also the right way to demand a refund), or to show up at the upcoming Jolla C2 support day in Berlin if you can.

P.S.: I wonder if the Jolla C2 allows for performing a “factory reset” to start the whole software installation anew? If so, you may try that first.

AFAIK it doesn’t. I can’t understand why. User should always have an option to factory reset device. There is even no way to reflash manually… Hopefully Jolla adds it.

If some devices stop working with the factory settings, I can understand that jolla doesn’t want any more defective devices…

C2 will have recovery mode and instructions for it in future, IIRC

Hi all, I would also like to provide my feedback on the C2.

When I received the C2 I waited and read the articles on the SFOS-forum. Especially the subject First Time Use. With the information from the last mentioned thread, I started using the C2.

All went well on the first boot-up and installation. Also the update to the latest SFOS went without any problems.

Then I used the backup I made from the Xperia III, and I was UP&Running. Intended use is to have the C2 as a daily driver.

That all went well, several apps (native SFOS and some others) all installed without any problems. Sometimes apps would hang on opening (WAIT or CLOSE message) but eventually they would start.

I am able to make outgoing calls, but incoming will not land on the C2. In other words when I call from a landline or a mobile number to de C2, the call is not received. The C2 not start ringing.

To test this, I have used the both available sim-slots and unfortunately for the both of them it does not work. Incoming calls do not land on the C2.

Changing the used sim to the Xperia III and everything works, incoming and outgoing calls. (as it did before I switched to the C2).

I am using a Dutch provider called: Youfone, 4G(+) an independent provider using the mobile network of KPN.

Since I need to be able to receive incoming calls, the C2 is for the time being not the right phone to be a daily driver for me. Maybe when bugs are resolved, it will become a daily driver, for now I am switching back to the Xperia III and looking forward to updates for the C2.

I’m leaning towards doing the same thing as you, keep it updated, do a few bits, but it’s not ready for daily drive. Maybe in a few months once 4G and VOLTE are sorted, limited to 3.5G is not enough nowadays.

I’m also going to need to figure out how to get GAPPS installed, unfortunately Google is everywhere and even my home heating controls require play services to connect.

One thing I notice is WhatsApp is barely useable for voice calls, the microphone and speaker cuts constantly making it impossible to use, not sure if worth of a bug report, but not having WhatsApp working fine is a big issue when you have family all over the world.

4G didn’t worḱ in my C2. 2.5G can receive calls.

In case you missed my story: I am one of those people whose c2 got stuck on the security code. After contacting Zendesk, I sent the phone back for repair. According to the package tracking, my C2 device will arrive back at the starting point soon. I think they will pick up the package in the next few days. Since then, I’ve been using an Xperia 10III as my everyday phone, which works great (with a paid license), apart from the quick battery drain. If over time C2 becomes as stable as sony is now, then I think it’s worth waiting. As soon as I have more information about C2, I will definitely report here.

Not to pile up on the 3G/4G VOLTE topic, but for example my network operator will shut down 3G by end of the year, that means to me the phone will become a nice paperweight until an update is launched and we can use VOLTE.

Be nice to have an update from the Jolla team, at least a timeline for rollout or an update of how are the tests going. A phone that can’t receive calls is not a phone :slightly_smiling_face:

Missing calls in 4G net is a known issue.

My C2 behaves the same with the SIM card, configured with 4G preferred in the mobile settings.

Set sim card(s) to 2G or 3G preferred and you you will receive incoming calls/sms

This is not necessary to manually switch to 2G before making or receiving a call. Phone should automatically switch to 2G when voice calling or receiving an incoming voice call. Under condition that a 2G network still exists.
My prehistoric Xperia 10 always does so, but here where I am, 2G and even 3G network still exist.

Hi jcoder, unfortunately I do not have the choice to set the sim to prefer 2G or 3G in my settings. Or I am looking at the wrong place. Could you tell me where this option is located?
Aside from that it is like ASeven.of.nine is stating that the C2 should automatically change between the frequencies.

Did you checked under Settings → Mobile Network?
