Feedback on Jolla C2

This is what I don’t like about the current state of my C2:

  • The GPS is horrible. It takes two or more minutes to find satellites outdoors on a cloudy day, and the fallback to WiFi and cellular positioning does not seem to work at all, making indoor use of dating apps like Grindr impossible. I downloaded the positioning packages from the Jolla store, but I read somewhere that the Mozilla positioning services it relies on were discontinued in 2024. This is a big no-go.
  • Android apps seem sluggish. Scrolling in Firefox and the Reddit app stutters; it’s not as fluid as in the stock browser on a simple website. I have a Samsung S24 Ultra for comparison, so maybe the CPU/GPU in this phone is too slow for smooth performance.
  • The permanent Android back button at the bottom is annoying. I wish there was an option to hide it and use a “swipe from the bottom” gesture to make it visible temporarily (which would override the Sailfish app drawer gesture, for sure).
  • If you don’t know that you must tap the version number in Android support settings multiple times, one will never find the Android settings to change font and screen size for Android apps - similar thing with the About Sailfish and debugger page. What else is hidden from me?
  • DRM-protected content using Widevine (Android) or native (stock browser on orf.at/live) does not work at all, which is, unfortunately, very widespread nowadays. This is another big no-go.
  • MicroG should be offered during the OOBE, in parallel to Aurora and F-Droid.
  • Something should be done to make Android apps believe they were installed from the Play Store, even though one actually used Aurora (all Austrian banking apps refuse to run because of this, besides of the classic root-check).
  • The numpad on the lock screen could be bigger; offering a pattern unlock instead would be nice.
  • There is no file browser installed by default.
  • The android_storage subfolder for Android apps is not explained; symbolic links to the Sailfish user folder would be better than actual folders.
  • I used my S24’s contact app (Samsung) to export my contacts. The VCF file couldn’t be imported into Sailfish, with no information on why; it just fails with a generic error.
  • Adding a picture (or attempting so) via contacts app to an existing contact opens an empty page when I click the image square. Might be because I didn’t store a single image on my phone yet. Could tell me where to store images or offer a camera button as well. Images added ar enot shown in the contacts list. would be nice to have the image in the list, and if there is no image, a placeholder with capital letters of the first and last name.
  • I imported an ICS file containing birthdays into the “private” calendar but actually wanted to import it into my Nextcloud account calendar (I added the account in settings prior) to have everything in sync. When I tried to import the same file again to Nextcloud, the calendar app tells me the entries are duplicates and throws a generic error when continuing.
  • ICS files can only be imported by opening them via a file browser. There is no import/export option within the calendar app itself.
  • I haven’t figured out yet how to create a custom wallpaper/ambience. I found an old thread which tells me it should be square, but gave up on finding information how to apply it.
  • When setting a custom ringtone, etc., the file browser expects the files in /home/Music. I initially put them in /home/Ringtones (a custom folder) because I wanted to keep them away from my music. There is no hint or information in the settings app on where to place them, they just don’t show up and I cannot select a custom folder either.
  • Keyboard: Text prediction, once available on N9 and older Sailfish, is missing. I also wish there was a setting to define the keyboard size, add a numbers row on top and have special characters available via long-press on standard keys, similar to Gboard.
  • Although supported by my provider, Spusu (Austria), registration for 4G VoLTE doesn’t work. Radio button flashes, but that’s it.
  • When configuring network/WiFi one can only choose to manually set IP AND DNS. Useless for public hotspots, I don’t know the correct IP configuration, but would love to use Adguard DNS at all times. Please allow configuring them separately. Also allow setting a custom DNS when using cellular network. I don’t want to use the DNS servers from my provider, but Adguard.
  • It seems the recent Let’s Encrypt root and intermediate CAs are missing by default (the stock browser complains that my site is unsafe at https://veryold.retrospace.net but doesn’t tell me exactly why).
  • No-brainer: Keep the integrated browser up-to-date and add an uBlock support. Surfing without such a blocker is a mess, especially on such a slow phone. I read something that you ever-since rewrite the Firefox code to a different coding language and fall behind because of your limited resources, is this rewriting really necessary?
  • Sad that the weather gadget is now gone.
