Contacts not synchronising to one of two Gmail accounts

REPRODUCIBILITY:

Yes

OS VERSION:

5.1.0.11

HARDWARE:

Sony Xperia 10ii

UI LANGUAGE:

English

REGRESSION:

To some degree it must be, as sync worked at some point in time, but that point is unknown and well in the past.

DESCRIPTION:

Contacts do not sync either way on one of two Gmail accounts. The account that does work is a work related one, and the one that doesn’t is a personal one. At some point it has worked as the phone is populated with a number of contacts, although this may go all the way back to the initial install on this phone. It’s difficult to tell when things stopped synchronising.

Google Calendar synchronises, as well as email. I have tried selecting manual synchronisation, turning off and on the contact sync, to no avail.

It is possible that completely removing the account and adding it may work, but I have not tried that yet, due to the inherent hassle of the system (probably?) then removing and having to fetch my whole email inbox, as well as the risk it does not help and I lose all contacts completely.

This has been going on for quite some time (noticed last year). So goes back at least a couple SF releases, and obviously the phone has been restarted many times along the way.

Re-entering credentials does not make a difference.

PRECONDITIONS:

It is unknown at what point this stopped working.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Add contact on Google

  2. or add contact on phone

  3. Notice Google contact is never synchronised to the phone, and vice versa.

EXPECTED RESULT:

Contacts added on Google appear on the phone, after a short delay.

ACTUAL RESULT:

Contact never appears from Google to phone, or vice versa.

MODIFICATIONS:

Phone is very intentionally kept at Jolla spec. So no openrepos or other extra repositories have been added, other than apps found from the Jolla Store, and F-Droid, Aurora and Android apps accordingly. Even Developer Mode has not been activated.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

You are not the first one to experience this.

Is it that the sync does not work or the account wants you to re-enter the password?

In both cases a deleting and recreating will be the easiest solution.

All mail and contacts (when synced from Goggle) will get downloaded again.

Only if you created them on phone and after the sync did not work, then they might get lost. You should backup your contacts from phone.

With me it’s like this:

I start the synchronisation (settings - apps - contacts - start import assistant - import). When I tap on “show accounts” my Google account is shown alright but also “account not logged in".

So I tap on my Google account to log in, I’m forwarded to Google’s accounts selection/login website, I tap on my account’s name to confirm it and to confirm that my Jolla account is allowed access to it.

Then sometimes my phone shows just my Google account without the message “account not logged in". (If it still says "not logged in” I repeat.)

And I see my Jolla account of course.

After that I swipe back to the apps section in the settings menu and start the import assistant again. I go to “show accounts” just to check if I’m still logged in, yes, I am.

At other times when I stayed on the page where I can tap on “show accounts” I had a button at the bottom of the screen that says “stop import".

I presume that means that my phone was synchronising with my Google account. I didn’t touch that button.

As I’m writing this I’m going through the described process and am waiting for the button to change to something like “import complete". The only thing happening at this point other than the button changing has been a message saying I would have to log in to my Google account again, which meant I’d have to start the whole process over.

But what if that “stop import" button never changes AND I don’t get an error message?

For me it’s that the sync does not work. I’m nnot asked to re-enter a password. It’s that the content never appears (either direction).

Deleting and recreating may indeed solve the issue for me personally, though it is indeed a bit of a pain as fetching the emails will take a substantial amount of time, and doesn’t tell me what the core issue was. Contacts created on the phone since this occurred would likely get lost, but that’s not going to be a huge issue.

Obviously I may yet do this (and on a personal level this may no longer be an issue once I soon jump on the new phone). Though of course it’s always satisfying to know what the root cause might be, and can help others.

I collected some basic logs, from msyncd.log the lines I could see pop up were the following:

[D] unknown:0 - Failed to load profile: “syncemail-2”

[D] unknown:0 - did not find a valid sync profile with the given name: “syncemail-2”

and

D] unknown:0 - Profile file not found: “/root/.local/share/system/privileged/msyncd/sync/google.Signon-2.xml”

[D] unknown:0 - Failed to load profile: “google.Signon-2”

[D] unknown:0 - did not find a valid sync profile with the given name: “google.Signon-2”

and

[D] unknown:0 - Profile file not found: “/root/.local/share/system/privileged/msyncd/sync/google.Contacts-2.xml”

[D] unknown:0 - Failed to load profile: “google.Contacts-2”

[D] unknown:0 - did not find a valid sync profile with the given name: “google.Contacts-2”

and

D] unknown:0 - Profile file not found: “/root/.local/share/system/privileged/msyncd/sync/google.Calendars-2.xml”

[D] unknown:0 - Failed to load profile: “google.Calendars-2”

[D] unknown:0 - did not find a valid sync profile with the given name: “google.Calendars-2”

Note that both my Google accounts sync calendars and email OK. It’s only my personal one that doesn’t sync contacts. I also have journal-sync.txt but couldn’t immediately spot anything relevant.

Happy to share the files with confirmed Jolla people.

Selecting what you think looks relevant is not really helpful here. We already know that your G account isn’t syncing. You need to supply the full output.

I’m not really promising anything btw, just wanted to point you in the right direction.

I realise that. But I would not be happy sharing full log files publicly, hence mentioning I could share with someone on the Jolla team (which you may be, I don’t know).

FWIW this sync works with the new Jolla phone as expected with the same account (albeit not yet added the other one that did work on the Xperia, so environment not yet a match).

You might need to anonymize them first. There probably isn’t much personal info in it anyhow.

And no, I’m not “on the Jolla team”, just a user like you.
