Community meeting on October 15, 2026

Please note new time slot

Schedule: Thursday 2026-10-15T16:00:00Z :world_map: :date:

Sailfish OS Community Calendar (ICS format)

Even if you do not participate, topics tend to generate discussion. I want to see discussion happening. Thus, I’m proposing that we’d use 10mins as minimum topic duration. Maximum 6 topics a week. We’ll continue with the extended 90 mins meeting duration.

Jolla to check action points from the previous meeting. We agreed today that we’ll start to follow up action points on each meeting.

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • Add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • Indicate how much time you’ll need so we can time-box the meeting accordingly.
  • Please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic.
  • If you can’t make the meeting please ask and name a substitute.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: always ask for more time than you anticipate your topic needs!

Please have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting so we can prepare good answers. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

  • Topic: Are there plans to support PWAs?

  • Some details about the topic: PWA (Progressive Web Apps) could be a really handy stopgap for missing native apps and also reduce the dependency on Android apps. For now it is only possible to create web shortcuts to the app grid but that’s it.

  • Approx. time needed: 10 min.

  • Substitute (optional): -

@Usbee Could you clarify what is missing exactly? From what I know PWA is only web technology, so why is it not enough to have the possibility to create a web shortcut? File url is blocked?

I want to install PWAs the same way as I can do that on desktop Linux with Chrome. Also I would like to open urls with those PWAs rather than opening them in a simple browser window.

I could also mention FirefoxOS as an example because it was possible to install web apps there, even though PWA wasn’t a thing back then. Both that and PWA allows to have webapps as locally hosted apps that can run offline, just like “regular” apps.

With my best knowledge it is not a thing on SFOS as there is no full PWA support, if there is any at all.

I see, the separate window ID is missing for PWAs when opening web shortcuts from the app launcher.

PWAs also dont use any of the regular browser ui like adress bar, tabs and so on, and the real useful thing is notifications via service workers. Vivaldi Browser (AAS) for example sends me notifications about new topics and replies from this forum that I subscribed/follow - SFOS browser doesn’t support this.

That’s HTML5 notifications, which probably aren’t too much work to add now. We don’t need full PWA support for that, which I think would be a substantial amount more work.

Oh, okay. On the other hand several web apps / PWAs need online access, will probably cache most stuff tgey need - but don’t need browser ui. So perhaps an option to hide browser ui would be a cool use case for that.

Nevertheless I don’t really understand why websites that worked earlier don’t work anymore now. Two examples:

Worked on 5.2.x on the new Jolla Phone (but not on 5.1 or earlier), now stopped with 5.2.0.17 update.

Stopped working with 5.2.0.17 update too, worked before at least on all 5.x versions…

  • Topic: Solving the SMS receiving problem

  • Some details about the topic: Some weeks ago my local record shop wrote me an sms to notify me about a very limited release, i didn’t see that, but casually i was going in there for other things so i could order the record in time. The reason why i didn’t see the message is that my Jolla Phone 2 didn’t receive any message. It’s not a JP2 problem, it’s a Sailfish one cause i’ve been plagued with this bug since forever on my XA2 and i sadly see situation is not changed on newer releases of Sailfish. Will this ever be solved?i lost count of lost messages through the years due to this bug, and it would be nice to see it solved, since i consider sms the most basic functionality of a phone…

  • Approx. time needed: 5 min.

  • Substitute (optional): Probably none, and i don’t know if i can make it to the meeting, so if appropriate you could just move this to general, but an answer is needed, as i’m tired of losing messages due to this (and hear people telling me to install whatsapp not to lose any more message)
