Community meeting on 18th December 2025

Please note new time slot

Schedule: Thursday 2025-12-18T16:00:00Z :world_map: :date:

Sailfish OS Community Calendar (ICS format)

Even if you do not participate, topics tend to generate discussion. I want to see discussion happening. Thus, I’m proposing that we’d use 10mins as minimum topic duration. Maximum 6 topics a week.

We agreed 9th October to extend meeting time slot to 90mins.

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • Add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • Indicate how much time you’ll need so we can time-box the meeting accordingly.
  • Please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic.
  • If you can’t make the meeting please ask and name a substitute.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: always ask for more time than you anticipate your topic needs!

Please have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting so we can prepare good answers. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

Template for topic proposal: (post your topic proposals as comments to this forum topic).

Topic: Mainline Linux kernel support for Jolla phones

Some details about the topic: There is a growing community of mobile Linux enthusiasts who are interested in running new close-to-mainline kernels instead of vendor kernels originally developed for Android. Some people are already asking about mainline support for the new Jolla phone. In the past, similar requests have been dismissed as not realistic. I think that many things have changed now. We don’t have a fully working phone with a mainline kernel yet, but some are getting extremely close.

This looks like a good opportunity for Sailfish OS, since using a mainline kernel could help with providing longer support for devices, attract more developers, and replace a lot of low-quality/unmaintained/proprietary manufacturer code with community-developed open-source software.

Would Jolla be interested in officially supporting community mainlining efforts for supported devices? Are there any chances that a close-to-mainline kernel for the Jolla C2 or the new Jolla phone will eventually be integrated into Sailfish OS, perhaps as an optional alternative? I would like to discuss the requirements for this.

Approx. time needed: 20-30 mins

  • Topic: Additional details on J2
  • Some details about the topic:
While I understand it is early days for the J2 and not everything is finalized, does Jolla have any further details to share on the following:
  1. U.S. band information - It is communicated that there will be support for U.S. market (roaming). Could more specifics be provided on which bands will be supported? I have at least one friend I could order the device for that I’ll be meeting up with in Prague next year, but he needs to know if it’d even support his network.
  2. Cyan cover? My cyan Jolla One needs a friend. That is all.
  3. Could STLs or similar of the back cover be made available so folks can make their own back covers?

  • Topic: Future plans of the Qt update
  • Some details about the topic: During the summer community meeting there were talks that the biggest reason Qt update haven’t happened was that there was not yet any customer willing to pay for it. After that Sami mentioned that there had been thinking of splitting the SailfishOS to fully open source version where Qt update could then be done and keeping other version for B2B customers. Has there been any development on this front? On other hand, I hope that financial situation of Jolla has improved and who know, maybe there could be money even to pay for Qt licenses  PS: STUNNING job with the J2 launch so far! Really excited to get my hand on one

  • Topic: Unable to call local emergency from lock screen
  • Some details about the topic: There has been great discussion about the problem in here Reliable emergency calls - #11 by jrg and at least here Unable to call local emergency number, only 112 - #30 by moripeluka. There has been reports that it is not possible to call local emergency numbers from lock screen, only 112. This sounds at least easy and important thing to fix why I want to raise the problem. There has been also reports that calling to the emergency service hasn’t worked at all in the urgent need. It would be great to hear if Jolla has been able to investigate that and is there hopes to get that working reliable?

  • Topic: AAS-Support on community ports

  • Some details about the topic: I believe I read somewhere in the past, that Jolla is thinking about supporting AAS on community ports. The port for the Xperia 1IV/5IV seems to have a high quality. Is there a chance it could be (the first) supported community port?
Here you find the information and discussion about the port itself: Sony Nagara (Xperia 1IV and 5IV) port

  • Approx. time needed: 5min (I think not much to discuss, more an information given by Jolla)

  • Topic: Waiting for the end of FOSDEM before to close J2 sales.
  • Some details about the topic: Someone evoked this on the Sfos TG: J2 could have some success during FOSDEM.
Isnt’t it a bit too bad to close the sales just before the end?
  • Approx. time needed: 0, as I cannot participate.

Unfortunately it seems that I can’t participate today… But, I would say thank you for whole community and to Jolla <3 Community determined exactly the specs I wanted for the phone and Jolla picked them out nicely. I definitely love the orange color and can’t wait to get my hand on J2!

I hope that there is bright future in front of Jolla, which hopefully can be seen soonish as a bigger investments to the Sailfish. Hopefully with this momentum Jolla is able to score more and more co-operations and interest.

From this community meeting it would be interesting to hear in general question section, what are the next short term (~6 months) plans, other than pushing J2 out?

Happy sailing to everyone! Merry Christmas already from my behalf and enjoy the well deserved holidays <3
