Community meeting on 18th December 2025

Please note new time slot

Schedule: Thursday 2025-12-18T16:00:00Z :world_map: :date:

Sailfish OS Community Calendar (ICS format)

Even if you do not participate, topics tend to generate discussion. I want to see discussion happening. Thus, I’m proposing that we’d use 10mins as minimum topic duration. Maximum 6 topics a week.

We agreed 9th October to extend meeting time slot to 90mins.

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • Add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • Indicate how much time you’ll need so we can time-box the meeting accordingly.
  • Please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic.
  • If you can’t make the meeting please ask and name a substitute.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: always ask for more time than you anticipate your topic needs!

Please have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting so we can prepare good answers. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

Topic: Mainline Linux kernel support for Jolla phones

Some details about the topic: There is a growing community of mobile Linux enthusiasts who are interested in running new close-to-mainline kernels instead of vendor kernels originally developed for Android. Some people are already asking about mainline support for the new Jolla phone. In the past, similar requests have been dismissed as not realistic. I think that many things have changed now. We don’t have a fully working phone with a mainline kernel yet, but some are getting extremely close.

This looks like a good opportunity for Sailfish OS, since using a mainline kernel could help with providing longer support for devices, attract more developers, and replace a lot of low-quality/unmaintained/proprietary manufacturer code with community-developed open-source software.

Would Jolla be interested in officially supporting community mainlining efforts for supported devices? Are there any chances that a close-to-mainline kernel for the Jolla C2 or the new Jolla phone will eventually be integrated into Sailfish OS, perhaps as an optional alternative? I would like to discuss the requirements for this.

Approx. time needed: 20-30 mins

  • Topic: Additional details on J2
  • Some details about the topic:
While I understand it is early days for the J2 and not everything is finalized, does Jolla have any further details to share on the following:
  1. U.S. band information - It is communicated that there will be support for U.S. market (roaming). Could more specifics be provided on which bands will be supported? I have at least one friend I could order the device for that I’ll be meeting up with in Prague next year, but he needs to know if it’d even support his network.
  2. Cyan cover? My cyan Jolla One needs a friend. That is all.
  3. Could STLs or similar of the back cover be made available so folks can make their own back covers?
