REPRODUCIBILITY: always
OS VERSION: 5.2.0.17
HARDWARE: JP 2026
UI LANGUAGE: English
REGRESSION: No

DESCRIPTION:

Impossible to send and receive MMS.

my workaround to send or receive MMS is to:

  • cancel sending MMS
  • turn off mobile data
  • turn off wifi
  • turn on wifi
  • turn on mobile data
  • retry sending MMS
  • turn off wifi
  • the MMS is sent

note: after that, impossible to send further MMS, the same process needs to be done again.

edit: important to turn the wifi on before the mobile data, otherwise it does not work.

PRECONDITIONS:

Have a Hallon (SE) SIM card.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. try sending/receiving a MMS
  2. not sending/receivin a MMS

Sounds a bit like you should try without wifi being on at any point.

I tried with only Mobile data, switching it on and off (Wifi disabled). The MMS are not sent.

It’s been like that for Hallon for a long time i need to turn of wifi and then toggle mobile data but i often find my self to turn of wifi and then toggle flightmode.
I need to toggle it some times for it to work and the number of times differ every time.
When i used comviq i never had any problems with mms but after switching to hallon it drives me crazy so much that i started to ignore most mms and don’t read them anymore hoping it’s not important.

The problem is the same for both send and receive mms so turn of wifi and toggle till you get irritated enough that you throw your phone in a wall or the ground and if your lucky the phone survives.

Ok! At least, I am not alone, thanks.

So this is an operator issue and not an SFOS issue?

I can’t say for sure it could be operator but it might just as well be sailfish OS doing things different than other operating systems where it works or Hallon not following standard.
I tried to get some info about it in May 2025 i used MMS Logger and sent the logs to jolla opened support/zendesk case but never got any good answer only a link to Messages Troubleshooting | Sailfish OS Documentation and that there are post in the forum about it.

I don’t know if ths is releated but I was unable to send an SMS with Jolla Phone 2026. After troubleshooting, I found this helped:

devel-su

systemctl stop ofono

rm -rf /var/lib/ofono/*

reboot

Copied from here Resetting oFono Settings | Sailfish OS Documentation

Thanks for those extra details. So this means that it is not only for the JP2026?
Did you change any MMS configuration? I realized that with the default MMS configuration I am unable to get it working at all.

Will edit my post with the configuration I used instead (but that is still not working as expected).

I tried every possible mms settings that i could find both with direct IP and domains i have also been in contact with hallon but that didn’t help me.
I could try it in my JP-2601 but i don’t expect any different results because it’s not related to a specific device.

Alright, thanks for your reply. I think I solved my issue, I hope that is a solution that applies also for you (but I doubt if you tried using a direct IP).

The default IP used for Hallon SE is 172.16.53.11, this does not work at all.
When using the address “mmsproxy.tre.se” it was working only when applying the sequence mentioned in the original post. I guess it was working partially because it was using shortly the WLAN instead of the SIM card internet (maybe related to MMS AP's get routed through the default interface if the proxy is a hostname ?)

I am now using the IP 80.251.201.193 for the proxy adress. It just works.

@pvuorela would this be something to update in GitHub - sailfishos/mobile-broadband-provider-info · GitHub ? Or will it break something?

Indeed these can easily be some problems in that data. Looks like the the mmsproxy / apn is our addition from 2014 when lot of things were added.

Now, googling quick i found this: Problem med MMS – Guide för inställningar | Hallon

Looks good otherwise but the mms proxy should be mmsproxy.tre.se which resolves to 80.251.201.193

If you’re up to it, you can even just edit the file on the device and see if it affects this, /usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml

Interested in hearing if that fixes things but could even just directly make such modification.

As side note we should be really pushing these to mobile-broadband-etc upstream.

Yes, it does work with the IP address you mentioned.

Ideally, we should use the actual proxy URL mentioned in the documentation you linked but it seems not to work (maybe due to MMS AP's get routed through the default interface if the proxy is a hostname ).

I guess I could update manually the file you mentioned, but it seems to work when I use the UI (I guess the settings are persistent?).

I been using the ip instead of domain address for over a year and it does not solve the problem.
I did change it in settings but i will try changing the file to see if their is any change in behavior.

It worked better after i edited /usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml and restored Access point MMS to default from pulley menu.
Why did this differ from editing i did in settings? (mmsproxy.tre.se to 80.251.201.193)
If i turned off mobile data it worked with or without wifi turned on.
If i turned on mobile data while connected to wifi it often shows as on but without the “3” symbol it still spells mobildata then it worked.
If i turned off wifi mobile data changes to “3” then it didn’t work, so only when using mobile data from ISP mms didn’t work.
I found that if i changed APN from data.tre.se to bredband.tre.se then it also works with mobile data from ISP.
So serviceproviders.xml should be updated

The section i edited 3 SE MMS

			<apn value="bredband.tre.se">
				<usage type="mms"/>
				<name>3 SE MMS</name>
				<mmsc>http://mms.tre.se</mmsc>
				<mmsproxy>80.251.201.193:8799</mmsproxy>
			</apn>

Now it works as expected for me so far.
No more toggling that drives me crazy.

After making that change so MMS worked Android (AAS) had no internet if i only used mobile data from ISP.
I restarted the services for network and mobile network and android support and rebooted many times but it wouldn’t work so i changed the access point for data to bredband.tre.se restarted the services from tools (verktyg) and AAS and i got internet in android apps again.
Rebooted to see if it still worked after reboot and it did so i then thought i try to change the access point for data back to the it’s original only to find that it was automagically restored after reboot and AAS had working internet over mobile data.
I don’t know what happened or why i only writing it here if anyone else encounter it.
I know have both MMS and AAS internet working over mobile data.

Big THANK YOU for testing and sharing this info. Finally I got my new Jolla to be able to send/receive mms which is crucial to me.

Same! I also made these changes directly in the MMS access point settings:

Access point name: bredband.tre.se
Proxy address: 80.251.201.193
(everything else left as it was)

MMS sending & receiving both started working immediately (no disconnect/restarting services/reboot needed). No issues with Internet connectivity from within AppSupport either. Will try a reboot just to check, but so far so good.

Finally, after 7 years of using SFOS on Hallon, MMS works flawlessly

Someone with a Github account should make a PR so it will be fixed for everyone, or will @pvuorela take care of it?

I can update this. Already started doing some preparatory work to do an upstream sync at the same time.
