MMS APs get routed through the default interface if the proxy is a hostname

I had some issues receiving and MMS, and looking at the network traffic and the logs, it looks like the mms system doesn’t add a route through the ccmniX interface if the mmsproxy isn’t an IP.

Changing the mmsproxy to the IP the hostname (mmsproxy.3.dk) resolves to (80.251.201.192) makes MMS work for me, but it seems a little fragile if 3 decides to switch around their IPs in the future.

Is this a known issue?

This is a known problem, and you’re right about the brittleness of the work-around. There are several threads on this forum regarding MMS issues. From reading these, it doesn’t appear that Jolla has any fix in the works that they’re ready to talk about.

I’m fighting the same battle with T-Mobile USA. Like you, I’d been using an IP address for the proxy that worked for quite a while, but then that seemed to start changing frequently for me, so I’m losing the fight to get pics and group texts.

I see some hope in the following FAQ from Commodore regarding the upcoming (Sailfish powered) Callback phone:

Yes, MMS messaging is supported, for multimedia messages such as high quality images and small videos.

If they do have MMS working worldwide, then hopefully whatever they fixed in their SFOS will work it’s way back to Jolla and the official and community Sailfishes.

Using IP address is safe and it shouldn’t change but if it would then you can update it, some non sailfish phones use IP so it shouldn’t be to fragile.

Does mms work if you only use mobile data from ISP and you are not connected to any wifi?
In Sweden i needed to change APN from data to bredband to get that working.

It worked better after i edited /usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml and restored Access point MMS to default from pulley menu. Why did this differ from editing i did in settings? (mmsproxy.tre.se to 80.251.201.193) If i turned off mobile data it worked with or without wifi turned on. Does mms work if you’re only connected to mobile data (no wifi) with the default data.tre.dk or do you need bredband.tre.dk ?

I’ve always had trouble sending and receiving mms. After reading the thread here, I tried pinging my mms proxy in the terminal on the phone to see if it resolved to the same address that’s in the cellular network settings. The ping address was ipv6, whereas the settings were ipv4.

At least I think it was ipv6. Is 2a02:aa0:2:2100::193: even a valid address?

And if so, even if I put 2a02:aa0:2:2100::193: in the mms proxy settings, it still doesn’t manage to download an mms. Is this mismatch part of the problem I’m having? And would this be fixable?
