Yet another Android app compatibility topic

Regarding “critical banking or a government ID”

@Jolla you have us! The community is certainly very keen to test all those critical applications on your behalf. On the model of the bank thread, we should start one on the government applications, so you get to know where the problems are.

And what when some of them stop working? Nobody can be caught making guarantees these apps work.

Like for the bank applications. When they stop working you document the fact in the wiki. There are no guarantees, but it’s important for prospective SFOS users (and existing users as well) to know exact the point of the situation, get a feeling how frequently the apps important to them break in their country, and see there is a supportive community.

Right; but as they alluded to - there is no need to wait for Jolla in doing so, or basically even involve them in the process.

We can and should start a thread on our own to document the problems. But Jolla said they don’t have a way to test because they don’t have a foothold in our countries. That is something we can provide.

It could be a programme for early testers: “We think we fixed something, please try again, collect the logs and send us”.

I’d also be happy to leave a phone on my desk for their SSH access or any puppeteering method so Jolla can test remotely, whether it’s installing apps, testing phone calls and collect VoLTE logs, maybe even request authorisations for testing emergency calls.

Doesn’t it basically already exist - just with somewhat luke-warm interest?

Everyone that spent 5 seconds thinking already knew this. All i’m saying is to not insert Jolla in the middle of this process and make them an involuntary bottle-neck or misrepresent user tests as guarantees.

I don’t know of a thread where users would list government applications in each country and give them a rating. A search for “government in:title” on the forum provided 5 results none of which are relevant.

It’s not new by itself, what’s new is Jolla is now saying prospective purchasers are contacting them about compatibility and Jolla doesn’t know what to do because they cannot test themselves. This is something we as a community can solve by documenting the situation on the forum so people can make their decisions.

Even lukewarm interest is better than none. I have no idea if the government apps of my place work or don’t work on SFOS, because the information doesn’t exist on the forum. I started using SFOS when these apps were not important, and later found workarounds to have them at hand. But maybe I wouldn’t be buying my first SFOS phone today if I already depended on a working Android configuration and could not tell which of the critical apps will work and if I can live with that.

Edit: “when these apps were not important”

Just extend the banking app list? They are basically the same crap in many places.

It could be s starting point but it’s not favouring discoverability of the information. Plus the thread is already difficult to read (confusing), at least in comparison with the clean table of the VoLTE thread.

I don’t think this would be a good idea. Yes, they are basically the same crap in many places, but for the user, this are two distinct apps with two distinct use cases. Grouping them all in one place makes it really cluttered and information hard to find. Also, someone who might need a government app but not a banking app would not have the idea to search for his app in a “banking app”-wiki.

This is true. I think it would be a good idea to make Wikis which are inspired by the VoLTE Wiki (by its structure) for government apps to. And, maybe also threads for different app-categories which are asked for very often

Or around here people confuse BankID for a government app. Can’t suit everyone. I still think having all app compatibility in one place is the way to go. Different sections, but one place.

Okay, I misunderstood you. Your idea actually sounds great

if we’re doing that, it might be a good idea to ditch the wiki and set up a service sorta like Plexus, just aimed at specifically AAS compatibility.
or just get Techlore to add Sailfish as one of the supported roms.

You could also make such a list over at sailfishos.wiki

There is also Sapio which does sort of the same thing as Plexus

I’ve started on these

EDIT: and someone has actually already gotten to it:

My aim would be to recorde:

  1. apps / services DO work
  2. work-a-rounds
  3. hopeless cases

EDIT, so I’ll just get in line

Yeah, that was me

I started to port this thread to the wiki and make it a little bit more legible. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to finish it yet

Feel free to change, edit, add, … anything there

Thanks for starting on it! I’ll see if I can finish it later.
