Xperia 10 II echo during calls

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100%
OS VERSION: 5.0.0.62
HARDWARE: Xperia 10 II
UI LANGUAGE: English (US)
REGRESSION: Don’t know

DESCRIPTION:

During normal phone calls the person on the other side hears themselves as they speak (echo).
This not a duplicate of bug report regarding loudspeaker as this happens on normal calls

PRECONDITIONS:

Nothing.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Call someone.
  2. The other person hears themselves.

EXPECTED RESULT:

Person on the other side should not hear themselves speaking.

ACTUAL RESULT:

Person on the other side hears themselves speaking.

MODIFICATIONS:

None. Clean flash of version .61 then updated to .62 - problem is present on both versions. Appsupport enabled and installed openrepos, chum, f-droid and aurora store (but no additional software installed).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

It looks to me like audio routing issue - either top microphone picks up audio from top speaker or bottom mic picks up audio from bottom speaker.

If someone can point me how to disable top mic or bottom speaker and make tests I’ll be happy to do so.

Hi, can you test it with CSD tool?
You can either start it via shell with command “csd” (not as root) or clicking on the “Sw version” in the “settings---- > device info” menu.

Give it a try and let us know

I’ve done mic and loud speaker tests but I’m not sure how this helps, so here are the details:

Audio below microphone: works
Audio above microphone: works, but is of slightly less volume and muffled a bit (i guess that’s ok)
Loudspeaker playback: works (played from top speaker)
Stereo loudspeaker playback: works but sound is emitted from both speakers at the same time (regardless of “left speaker” / “right speaker” sample) - could this be the problem?
Receiver playback: sound is played (don’t know what this test is for)

Ok: this tell us you don’t have HW issues. I use the same device (Xperia 10 ii) with SFOS 4.6 and reducing the loudspeaker sound during a call lowers the echo. You could try a test calls with this calibration and observe if it improves the performances. If the SW version is the main reason for the echoes than it is a regression on SFos 5.x and has to be improved on development side

I will experiment more and see if there is a satisfactory workaround. I’m currently investigating if there is a way to disable either top mic or bottom speaker (or both) to see if it makes any change. This should be possible, I think, with pulseaudio config.

If anyone has any info/pointers on that matter please share.

I did some thorough testing to eliminate HW as potentially problematic AND different android versions (baseband);

  • Flashed the oldest version of android available in Emma (59.0.A.1.296), used android for couple of hours - tested wifi, 4g, gps made couple of phone calls - first phone call had echo for couple of seconds and then it went away and there was no echo on subsequent calls

  • Flashed SFOS - echo is always there and it never goes away

  • Flashed the recommended android 11 as per documentation → 59.1.A.2.169 and used it for couple of hours - again, wifi, 4g, gps, couple of phone calls - the behaviour is the same as with Android 10 - echo first couple of second for first phone call, then it completely goes away.

  • Flashed SFOS again, echo is there and it doesn’t go away, ever. It is so bad that reducing volume does not help (tried little under 50%) but lowering it more would make it unusable as I would not be able to hear the other side.

This is most definitely problem with SFOS which makes my phone currently completely unusable as a phone. As a matter of fact, it’s worse than it was on 10 III

I’m open to suggestions

Can you hear it yourself, or are you going by reports from the people you call?

Is VoLTE on or off?

VoLTE is off. Only receiver hears it, I do not.

I’m going to buy one more sim card and put it in other phone so I can do test calls and record.

Well have you tried with VoLTE? Or is it not available for you?

Unfortunately, VoLTE is not available on my current plan. I’m using multiSIM service which enables me to have two sim cards with same number and they work in parallel. So they both ring at the same time, receive sms messages, etc. This makes it possible for me to run both my daily driver (iphone 15) and sfos in parallel.

Downside is that VoLTE is not available in this scenario.

But regardless of volte, basic telephony should just work reliably

So just to make sure .61 worked fine and this is .62 regression? Or is the last time it worked fine on 4.6?
Edit just to be clear, regression ‘don’t know’ makes it very ambiguous if it ever worked fine and then it includes flashing .61 then upgrade to .62 step, but really unsure if that was needed to trigger this bug or just first 5.x, would help narrow down possible culprit

I updated bug description. I did a fresh install of .61 and problem was there. Soon .62 was released and the problem is still there.

Since I just got this phone (On February 27th to be exact, then used it with android 12 for couple of days) I never had versions prior to 5.0.0.61 installed so don’t really know if this is a regression or not

Worth flashing 4.6 (if the bug is a dealbreaker and doesn’t happen there win-win, you get a usable phone and the appearance of it is nailed to 4.6-5.0 transition, but would expect a lot more people reporting it if that is happening on all XIIs, edit: there is quite a lot of XII users, so maybe updating from 4.6->5.0 carries over some things pure 5.0 flash skipped/forgot to include??? Not even sure if that’s a thing that can happen, but if you get echo on 4.x that’s also a datapoint that could help)

Where can i get pre 5.0 image to flash? Couldn’t find it anywhere… When I go to my jolla account (purchase history) I only have “Download” button which pulls only the latest version (5.0.0.62 currently)

I would be happy to try.

It is possible that there are not that many X10 II users OR majority use VoLTE (just guessing)

Oh right, they only offer latest, I’m sure some friendly XII user can upload it somewhere, plenty of users with a copy on their hdd, yeah sorry forgot about that

I use X 10 II and VoLTE

Just got message from @mettska and a link to SFOS 4.1 image - will try to flash it tomorrow and report back.

Thanks @mettska !

Flashed 4.1 but echo is still there! This is interesting and I find it highly unlikely that it was not reported by anyone all this time.

I’ll flash back the newest SFOS and start playing with config files, there must be something special going on here.

Hardware is not faulty because everything works ok on android (10, 11 and 12)

Just did a test call between 2 X10 II, both are on .62 no echo on both sides. And never observed with previous versions from very beginning.

So it could be related to my operator or there is some HW specific difference on my Xperia 10 II being bought from china (refurbished) [android os was in Chinese]

I’ll continue investigating and will report back my findings
