Oh, it would be so so great to have full featured xmpp client for SFOS ![]()

Anything new with XMPP? Was Jolla team not saying, they will open source that part of OS settings?
Sadly I think where is not much interest in xmpp anymore, please people let me know if I’m wrong
(the more, the better).
We discussed a lot during last 2 months ![]()
Clear is, xmpp is not that very common protocol actually, but since it was always part of SFOS it can be a good plus point. Many of us see this same way, centralized messenger service is not the best solution.
And I think this community really don’t want to go with actual every fancy trend ![]()
And just out of curiosity: what should we use instead of xmpp?
Matrix (20 characters )
No. It has all the drawbacks mentioned above. Matrix requires centralized servers and is over complicated. Definitely not for “non-nerd users”.
At the moment the answer is simple: Deltachat and Tox. Deltachat is based on email service, TOX is P2P protocol. There are native clients for SFOS ArcaneChat TUI and jTox. So far for Deltachat there is only terminal native client for SFOS but I believe that after updates that will come with 5.1 that is going to change.
In reality, it was easier to bring my contacts to conversations as to element. No one of my contacts, who tryed matrix last year is still there. It was like 25 people. But 17 of them using conversations now and are happy.
To me, the flag just proves that I am right. ![]()
Wasn’t me, I also don’t know if you are right. This is just discussion with exchange the opinions, nothing with right or not ![]()
Hello, just subscribed. I am a very long time xmpp user, and recently I saw new interest in this protocol, since very handy new mobile apps appeared (mainly filiations of Conversations, which is a very solid foundation).
I am currently selfhosting several Snikket instances, and an ejabberd one. I’m active member of the italian xmpp community https://www.xmpp-it.net/ . Our general public group chat is at
xmpp:xmpp-it@conference.xmpp-it.net?join (copy and paste in your xmpp client, Discourse seems not to understand xmpp uris)
There is actually no really working clients for xmpp for SFOS available. In devices with AAS vonversation looks ok. But some people here hope for integrated native one in (near?) future. ![]()
Borogove was born inside Snikket, but has more general ambitions: Snikket Blog | Introducing Borogove, the new Snikket SDK
XMPP libraries are already available for most platforms to perform a lot of the work for developers. However, they generally still assume and require a level of familiarity with XMPP, and require the developer to make certain higher-level architectural decisions when building an app. This includes things like message synchronization strategies, processing push notifications, audio/video calls, and so on.
Our SDK is not yet another XMPP library. In fact, it actually uses existing XMPP libraries itself. What the SDK provides is the middle “glue” layer between the user interface and the messaging protocol layer. The SDK itself hides every detail of XMPP from the app developer.
It is a very recent initiative, but a prototype of a web app is already available. It seems to me a very interesting one also from the SailfishOS perspective.
I think, we had already link to snikket here somewhere. I am not really app dev, i cannot estimate the effort needed to implement this on the SFOS. But there is mentioned like chat client in one weekend ![]()
