Is there any rumours to support the Linux operating system family more boarder than just SailfishOS? Will SailfishOS run with the mainline kernel or Android kernel+BSB like Jolla C2? (Hardware Adaptation Development Kit | Sailfish OS Documentation)
Bringing up new hardware to run with a mainline kernel takes a lot of time, so the Jolla Phone will initially be shipped with an Android kernel + libhybris-based build.
However, this does not mean that the phone is doomed to run the same software forever. Jolla intends to make it possible for users to change the operating system.
I think it’s quite likely that the community will be able to get postmarketOS and a mainline kernel running on the phone sooner or later. Since the new Jolla Phone seems to be more popular than the C2, I’m hoping that more people will contribute to such efforts.
I think I have skipped that in the announcements, do you have a link where they say this? Thanks in advance!
Not sure it was said; but nothing comes with a pure Linux BSP - so it is basically a given.
Also, regarding the question in the thread - basically no phones support PMOS; PMOS supports phones (eventually).
You have that the wrong way around, you should be asking “Will PostmarketOS likely support Jolla Phone?”
And while there’s technically no reason to not support a brand new phone, please consider the name of that OS, and consider that Jolla are just about to go on the market with their new device.
Look, I’m sorry if I (and possibly others) sound a little miffed, but we’ve had an insane influx of interested newbies with demands - and the weirdest questions, or their personal feelings about what is a “must-have”. Sheesh.
I asked the Mobian community about supporting the J2 some months ago as well. Their feedback has been, that Mediatek SoCs are more closed and thus harder to use mainline kernel and drivers than Qualcomms.
So my take away of that feedback is: together with the small volume of the phone and with it the small possible user base, it is not so likely to happen.
In fact, that was the reason why the first Fairphone didn’t have an AOSP version so that would confirm the unlikeliness.
This is not true. They are harder to mainline because there are fewer existing mainline drivers. Qualcomm SoCs may have more mainline support at the moment due to their popularity, but they have just as many closed components as MediaTek SoCs. (Some manufacturers refuse to release the kernel sources for their MediaTek-based phones, but that is a different story and hopefully won’t be a problem with the Jolla Phone.)

It often take one person to port. Which is not neceserry connected to either of your claims.
I guess that in this forum is more porters to SFOS then PMOS. At least from my count. So I’m not sure that this forum is the best one for that topic answer.
