What would be best strategy for Jolla going forward?

Fairphone and e/os are collaborating with help from the Horizon project. Apparently Horizon saw some sense in this. There indeed are strong voices within EU to become technically more independent from the US. This has nothing to do with the appeal on European countries to boost their military budget. .

I agree. Oligarchs flourish in a country with free market absolutism, low tax and a high income gap. This way US big tech companies could emerge with the help from Venture Capital.
Fairphone was founded by a thinktank in Amsterdam: De Waag. They favour privacy friendly federated tech. They founded Bits of Freedom and Soverin mail. And now they coöperate with e/os. Marleen Stikker a philosopher, is one of them.

@fingus You can follow EU news directly. Decisions of parliament and Commission and documents are public. There also exists an organisation that watches lobbyists.
The reason why the project of Fairphone and e/os got funding is that these two want to create something that is suitable for everyone. They don’t want to be niche.

At least not for official supported Devices like Jolla C2:

So they have time until End 2025 to update it.

This reminds me to Volla in Germany, one of the founders is philosopher as well if I am not mistaken

Structures in EU are different to US, but I am not really familiar with this area, my industry is a completely different niche

so, only private opinion

i wonder if a EU leader in this matter (phone Os) would suggest to grant funds after reading this forum where he will get the feeling that a lot of things are not going as they should on SailfishOS

and the naked truth is that a lot of things are not going as they should

@Throwaway69 No one here was talking about Jolla and scam except you
What I said: crypto is being associated with fraud and crime. That is a statement about a general opinion based on the frequency of certain financial frauds. It’s not a suggestion that it concerns Jolla. Not at all.
Concerning Google: I have no Google account. How many can say that?

Fun fact: Bert Hubert developed the ‘Googerteller’ . It beeps each time when Google is present on your computer. On Github. Only for Linux.

I did try morena cloud 2 years back and it was no good
And my expectations were not high.
Same Level as a standard nectcloud host would have been fine. After trying to merge contacts i stoped
Surprised to hear they got funding

Not often enough. (agree + mee too)

Agreed, and o/

As a matter of fact, of this entire avoid list I only have the following; which I use as little as possible:

  • PayPal
  • Windows (requirement for work, I use Linux privately)

I agree that politicians from the EU do not really understand privacy, but what I was replying to was a comment complaining about “fucking commies”. That has nothing to do with this thread. If someone wants to complain about the EU’s privacy practices then there are plenty of other ways to say that outside of shoving politics into the conversation

Best strategy, as @avhakola above said, is to sign a big B2B contract. For anything: app support, automotive, AI, it does not matter what, as long as they have spare money to continue supporting the phone.

And in particular related to the phone offer, we can debate a long list of things to be improved, e.g. camera support, AppSupport, bluetooth, Qt6. But only one criterion is prohibitive: if it does not make and take reliable phone calls and text messages, it’s not worth using.

Therefore my opinion is they should focus on the fundamentals: a phone that works. The day VoLTE becomes compulsory, Jolla does not have a product anymore.

If there is transparency and a democratic decision making about allocating money like with the Horizon project, I would prefer that to funding from a US, Russian or Chinese Venture Capitalist.
@throwaway
Saying that this political or governmental involvement in a private company is obfuscating the matter. Did Jolla not get some kind of support from the Finnish government?
I hate the coming EES program and the British equivalent, the ETA program.
However there are also good rules made by EU that other continents/countries don’t have:
GDPR. Regularly I get news updates from NOYB, founded by Max Schrems, about court cases of violations of GDPR is European countries. Everyone can report cases to them.

Not one alternative is suitable for everyone at the moment yet a serious alternative is needed if we don’t want to be dependent on the duopoly.
Porting is smart but be honest, it’s only nice for hobbyists.
Jolla could opt for crowdfunding again and create a Jolla 2.
Jolla could hire flex experts for marketing and tech, like Volla does.

What I have read is that Fairphone and e/OS got funding for a pilot, nothing more. Duval tries to create a sustainable business model, which is good, but his system is still Android and not a real OS like Sailfish. The same with Volla.

i have had eos and vollaos both.
but even when not using the phone, i have tried out the morena cloud
they have a tiny free plan and paid ones
which i think is a good idea, but

Volla at least is also providing preinstalled Ubuntu touch

And in addition there is the dual- boot or multi-boot option with Volla
