What actually is Aurora OS and who is using it?

Where is written that they are buying something that is closed source? I read a partnership between these 2 countries. Probably both institutions under governments jurisdiction will contribute to the project. That will make it stronger. Yes, Jolla could have implemented this role and collect the fruits, but it is not.

Those pesky Russians producing gadgets that actually work!

Don’t kid yourselves!

As much as I hope for viable alternatives to iOS and Android, Aurora OS is nothing but a government-sponsored political-propaganda-based tech-project.

And, like all political-tech projects, it has minimal chances of competing openly with an organic tech-project (such as Android and iOS) in the end-user market.

They have improved Sailfish OS in many obvious and clearly necessary ways when it comes to the user experience, but I’m not holding my breath for a success story of Aurora OS.

I’m also following the evolution of Harmony OS Next, which has significantly higher chances of success than Aurora OS precisely because Huawei does have an actual user base and actual fan base in the free market.
It also has years and years of actual experience with customers.
It is overall in a different league.

But, again, odds are against them as well.
Many others have fallen on this battlefield and it would basically be a miracle for a viable third mobile OS to appear nowadays.

Nevertheless, more competition to the established and only relevant players (Android and iOS) is a very good thing.

Unfortunately, I fear Aurora OS is nothing more than a waste of Russian (and more recently Indian, allegedly) taxpayers’ money.

almost everything is a waste of money until you get in a situation where the sellers don’t sell to you because they don’t like you

I think they destroyed the cover concept with that useless cover title bar. You can see that there is a web browser, navigation map, and app store, so there’s no need to waste space on the title bar cover. However, they seem to want something different from SFOS and sacrifice the already good design.

the “already good design” is very dated and, to tell the truth, not very convenient nowadays

Innovation has no expiration date, certain good things, like the wheel, don’t need to be reinvented. On the other hand, it’s good that they try to move forward so users have more choices.

Everything works and it works on a very capable device, which is not the case with Sailfish…

The cover design on Aurora OS is one of the obvious and badly needed improvements that Sailfish OS is missing.

Ideally, the covers should have the superior Aurora OS design by default, but there should be a system setting to allow users to switch to the old, confusing cover design.

I understand if your argument is that the old cover design is prettier. I agree, it is prettier.

But saying the title bar with the app icon is useless, is just a dumb thing to say. It is far superior when it comes to quickly identifying the app that you are looking for because it greatly simplifies and speeds up the process for the user.

What are you even talking about?!

Both the OKO Phone 5 and the Jolla C2 are VERY similar, low-specced, hideous turds, stupidly cumbersome to use because they have no fingerprint sensor (or other biometric login method) in 2025 ffs…

I wouldn’t be bragging about that joke of a phone if I were you.

You’re right. AuroraOS is indeed a fork of SailfishOS, developed primarily for the Russian market. It’s more closed off due to governmental and enterprise requirements, which limits public documentation and device availability. Most updates and news are shared in Russian, which makes tracking progress tricky for non-speakers.

That said, contributions from Aurora developers to SailfishOS are genuine and ongoing, especially at the system/core level. Devices are mostly custom or government-issued, not widely available commercially .

Hope that helps clear things up a bit!

Total BS. This has not been true for several years.

And who are you even replying to?

!!! UPDATE: The specs are correct. I’m sorry, I’m an idiot. I left the rest of the post as it was. !!!

Just to make things clear, the specs in this post (the one I am replying to) are partially false.
That is probably why he did not provide a link to some official source connected to this phone.

Do not trust those specs!

That phone does not have a fingerprint sensor, as can be seen on the manufacturer’s website.

You are intentionally lying about the specs of the phone.

This post replaces my post which was hidden by the wonderful jolla community.

Wow, some goobers flagged my post in which I was exposing that liar, so the information is now hidden and he can scam victims into buying a phone with fake specs.

That’s why I posted another shorter reply to expose the liar…again…
Apparently Jolla employees like lying scammers…

This forum is full of quality people lol
