Weird problem: phone got stuck showing 3G mode, no calls were possible

Xperia 10 III, Sailfish OS 5.0.0.62, two SIM cards

I received and answered a call, but heard no audio (and apparently the caller did not hear anything either). Tried calling back, but nothing happened, then I got distracted by something and put the phone away. In the mean time multiple people tried calling me, got the ringing signal, but my phone did not ring; I received a few SMS messages, but I only noticed them later, because I didn’t receive any notification. A few hours later I tried making another phonecall, and again nothing happened; at that time I tried calling both of my numbers from another phone, and while my phone did not ring, the ringing signal was heard on the phone I was calling from. At this point I noticed that the network indicator was showing 3G, so I tried restarting network and home screen through Sailfish Utilities, and systemctl --user restart voicecall-manager through qCommand, none of which helped – had to restart the phone to get calls back.

I have the same problem on a semi regular basis. It is very annoying.

I have discovered that restarting the audio sub system by using the Utilities function in Settings fixes the problem.

So far I considered two distinct problems:

  • rarely: the stuck on 3G cse described by the OP. No idea if phone calls work nor if audio is down. I will check next time.
No clear pattern for reproducing - I would say when commuting a lot, on the move, when in tube, transportation…
The only fix I found: reboot.

  • often: audio dies without notice. No sound on either side of a phone call, no matter if via Bluetooth headset /car unit or phone itself.
    Other artefacts: stuttering video
    I correlate with memory issues/OOM.
    Some correlate with GPS usage.
Fix: restart audio works several times, after which a reboot is required.
