Ways that AAS on the Jolla Phone 2 is much worse than on the Sony Xperia 10 III

I’ve been trying to set-up my Jolla Phone 2, so I can use it to replace my Android phone, but I’ve quickly run into some unexpected problems with Android App Support - which do not happen on my Sony Xperia 10 III running SfOS.

This is really surprising, but I can only assume it’s due to the Jolla Phone 2 running a newer (more buggy) version of Sailfish OS (5.2.0.17) than my Sony (5.1.0.11), with a different version of AAS (Android v15 vs v13). Or perhaps it’s due to me using the built-in MicroG (from the Jolla store), rather than it being manually installed from F-Droid?

• When playing a YouTube video in full-screen mode on Firefox, I am unable to pause/unpause it by tapping in the middle of the screen, unless I take it out of full-screen. Works fine on my Sony.
• Despite having “Speech Recognition & Synthesis” installed from the Aurora store, Android apps & the underlying Android OS itself don’t think any voice synthesis is installed. Works fine on my Sony.
• Here WeGo (the Android version!) seems to freeze in the Settings screens, such that the graphics don’t get updated at all, or only after I switch away from the app & then go back to it. On my Sony it works fine.

And I’d be interested to know if any other Jolla Phone 2 users do NOT get these problems…

It is known problem currently, my understanding is that they are looking for fix. Workaround is to use it through browser

Does “Speech Recognition & Synthesis” work for anyone on the Jolla Phone 2?

Haven’t tried, I’m using the FUTO Keyboard port and its speech recognition isn’t bad

I noticed that in landscape mode in software running in AAS has sometimes touch issues.

There is no setting to cut of internet completely from applications which would be useful. Also have i not found a setting to stop applications from running in the background. Separate VPN services to what Sailfish itself uses is also not possible.

There is no way i found to pull up the back button in full screen software without invoking the app drawer gesture or the background applications gesture.

loading a config of 1.1GB for Futo Keyboard in AAS Futo Keyboard is just crashing trying to load it in.

Having only 1 user in AAS is limiting as all the applications can see each other also the logged in google account (if logged in) which could be seperated out by just having work profile support in AAS.

The notch areas to the sides of the notch is blacked out in AAS making it a unusable screen space for Android apps what could be used by showing information like battery percentage and connection information maybe?

But overall it is quite solid and is way nicer to use as waydroid.

(To switch AAS to a approach similar to Android Translation Layer would be the best way for android support on Linux in my mind but that is just wishful thinking currently or in the close future)

If we are still talking about Android apps, go to Settings -> Applications-tab -> [App of your choice], and there should be a toggle to enable the background process auto starting, and a button to stop the process, if it is already running.

Yes but that is not what i was talking about there as this means i have to go into settings after every use of an application that i don’t want in the background and have to terminate the process but by having the option as you would have in AOSP to not allow it to run in the background at all would make this be automatic.

The size is ~1.1GB just because of the voice models i have and the multiple languages as i do not only speak English and it does not share the voice models.
It also contains some personal dictionary entries for some words or phrases.

Does anyone known if it is possible to get Waydroid running on the J2? I have some apps that work flawless in Waydroid on a community port SFOS device but do not start in app support, neither in J2, nor Xperia 10 iii.

The latest versions (4.18.x /4.20.x) freezes for me too, the 4.17.200 version seem to work ok though.

GPS Navigation that works

I wanted to use Here WeGo as a second option for Pure Maps, but the latest version didn’t work well with my new Jolla phone. Typed text wouldn’t show until I hit enter and any button took 5-10 seconds. I downgraded to 4.17.200 (48576030) and now the app works well. Version 4.18 already had the same problems as the latest one (4.20.110). Sharing in case it helps someone with the same problem.

BTW, it’s more advanced & less buggy than the “AAS Net Access Manager” app someone mentioned, as that was based on the very first release of my script, and I’ve made many improvements since (plus the way the app reloads the firewall rules may cause problems eventually). The biggest advantage is my script has an “allow list” mode, where all AAS apps are blocked by default.

The Map app freezing should be fixed in the next 5.2 release I think.
