VPN not working at all, no matter what I try, what have I missed?

Hi all, I have read everything related but still cannot make VPN work on any level. The Android apps say “VPN connections are not allowed”, and the system settings VPN does not work either. Tried only OpenVPN config files so far, but none worked. Any ideas? TIA

Forget about Android apps for this.
Seaech for older threads - you are not alone with these questions.

Thanks. I did check previous replies to similar problems, none of them were solved, and none of them solved my problem either. So may I conclude that VPN is a hit-and-miss, works for some, does not work for others, there is no general solution? Mine is a Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra dual SIM, but unlikely that the problem is specific to my model, as I see from previous posts.

I read your message on my XA2, using the SFOS Forum app, while connected through VPN to my own OpenVPN server. I had no problems setting it up. (using GitHub - Nyr/openvpn-install: OpenVPN road warrior installer for Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS and Fedora)

It also works great for Android support. Nothing special needed there.

Actually it works better using VPN than without, due to the known issues when switching networks, because the VPN connection now is constant regardless the underlying network.

May be you are able to give a bit more details than “not working”?

Having used Openvpn for years, now using Wireguard. Of cause there are some things to consider, but generally it should be possible to get it working.

Fuzzilogic, ziellos: inspiring to read that it works fine for you! For me, I am trying to use publicly available OpenVPN config files, both in the SFOS VPN option in Settings, and in the Android OpenVPN Connect app, and so far none of the worked. Just waiting, waiting, and nothing happens, never connects. I will read that link about hosting my own VPN (in fact, years ago I did already, just forgot how I did it), perhaps with my own VPN server it might work. However, I think the problem is not specific to either my device or the fact that I am using public OpenVPN configs. VPN did not work with ProtonVPN or RiseupVPN either, both being Android apps. No idea what’s wrong…

The yellow one? Or that one from that guy with that internet thingy?

Man, if your not specific about your problem you are just wasting everybodies time.

If you do it right, it just works. If not, it doesn’t.

Just read publicly available wisdom and solve your problems yourself or let people help you.

Thank you. You are right, I am in the wrong place to ask for advice. I give up, will use SFOS without VPN functionality, it is fine. Not a big problem. Cheers

Can you share it with us? And check this page VPN | Sailfish OS Documentation Don’t hesitate to note what you didn’t understand to improve the documentation as the sources are available on GitHub (check footnote).

Wow! Thank you VERY much! This vpnbook thing worked very well. I was using free Japanese VPN configs (vpngate.net), none of them worked so far. Alas, these vpnbook servers are all in countries which censor information, so using them is not much help, but oh well… at least it proves that the VPN modul theoretically works well. Thanks again! Now the task is to find free, working, uncensored VPNs in the world. The Japanese all are like that, and they work very well in all other platforms (OpenVPN configs), alas, on SFOS so far all fail. I tried to adjust all parameters in the “Advanced” dialogue, no luck. Android VPN apps, dedicated ones, like Proton and Riseup, failed, too. Still not sure what is different here and what I can adjust to make it simply work…
