REPRODUCIBILITY: YES
OS VERSION: 5.0.0.76
HARDWARE: Sony Xperia 10 III
UI LANGUAGE: English
REGRESSION: No

DESCRIPTION:

VoLTE and 5G can not turn on

PRECONDITIONS:

Sailfish OS 5.0.0.76 (VINAPHONE network in Vietnam)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

VoLTE and 5G status on Xperia 10 III in Vietnam

  1. Turn on “prefer 5G”

  2. Turn on 4G calling (VoLTE)

EXPECTED RESULT:

5G icon or VoLTE on top right corner of the phone

ACTUAL RESULT:

The signal is still 4G and the “4G calling (VoLTE)” keep blinking although the mobile network is supported these functions.

MODIFICATIONS:

Reboot the phone but no change anything

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

the “4G calling (VoLTE)” keep blinking

only 4G is detected

That’s not a thing.
VoLTE is just what it says; Voice over LTE, not a whole separate radio technology.
Ans what relation you mean that it should have with 5G is really rather unclear.

You’re right, I might be mixing it up a little, let me summarize my issue:

  • This phone supports volte and 5g.

  • Before inserting this sim, I tried to find some information confirming that this network (Vinaphone) was fully compatible with 5G and Volte.

  • But in fact, I cannot observe it in the status bar of this phone although I’ve activated in the settings, I rebooted and reactivated but it did not change anything.

I’m not sure if it’s because of this region or due to sailfish os, I don’t really get it

Also I would like to report this to Jolla, this region is maybe not supported.

Your phone itself has to support your carrier for VoLTE.
All phones do 4G data on all carriers, but only some phones will work on VoLTE for a particular carrier. (Yes, I realise this sounds insane)

If the phone did not do VoLTE in Android, it will not do it in SF.
If you did not test it before reflashing to SF, you can flash it back to Android, or try someone else’s X10III if you know of one.

Was the X10III sold locally by local carriers? If it was, VoLTE has a better chance that it was supported.

Sadly here in NZ, Sony did not sell the X10III in NZ, Sony did not include any configuration for NZ, and they do not do VoLTE on any network.

In some countries, apparently, they do work on one carrier, but not another, so you might try sims from all the different carriers.

FYI
NetMon VoLTE shows volte connection status
CellMon can show you the bands in use

Thanks for your advice, I’ll install those apps and check my phone again.

Have you checked the band support for 5G - should it work?
I assume you tried the sim in another phone and it works.

Did you follow the advice from the flashing guide; i.e. to test with Android first?

5G band n77, n78 is totally supported. however, honestly I’ve not tested 5G function yet, so let me try to test it with Android and reflash later

After reflashing, I can confirm that android is supported 4G calling (volte) and 5G at the same time.

As you can see, but on Sailfish 5.0.0.76, not at all.

And this is on whatever Android version that you are recommended to flash over?
(As opposed to some newer version).

I followed step by step this tutorial, the only difference is Emma showed that my device was on android 13.

What Android version did you flash over last time?

I don’t know how much of the VoLTE enablement is in the AOSP blobs versus left from before.
But it sort of looks like flashing SFOS over 13 can work (do form your own opinion), even if only 11 and 12 are recommended.
I’d give it a nonzero (but still slim) chance this helps if the phone was originally flashed over an older version.

When I bought this phone, it showed “android 13”, I thought that was the latest version and I flashed this version at least 3 times.

Okay, then that’s not going to help. Your description has been validated and i’m out of ideas.

Thanks for your cooperation, I’ll keep following this problem and waiting for Jolla, It might be a big update to fix this.

Not sure what Jolla can do about this. VoLTE is not within the purview of Jolla.
I don’t have 5G here in AUS but do have VoLTE, surprisingly it seems

It’s kinda weird though

Is this a regression or not?

Meaning, has this worked for you previously on the same device, with SFOS?

Your topic & replies suggest that this is NOT the case.

As was pointed out, this can have many reasons which Jolla maybe cannot even fix.
I’m not saying your complaint is invalid though.

No it’s absolutely not. I just want Jolla know that it’s a bug which occurs in this country. I’m even aware they won’t fix it right away.

This is what worked for me (it sucks, but I can’t figure out another way); NZ Adding VoLTE to X10III - #35 by tn71

Have you tried this: VoLTE on the Xperia 10 II - filling in the gaps - #112 by koza

Except with a different mbn location; maybe, like:
echo “mcfg_sw/generic/common/default/vl/global/mcfg_sw.mbn” > modem.conf

I tried this, but the phone status didn’t change.

You mean, copy two files into the “defaultuser” and flash it following your command, right ?
