Very bad sound in recordings from Jolla Phone 2026

I did some videos from a rock concert yesterday and sadly had to notice later that the sound is very bad. Some parts are like a noise filter had deleted instruments, some were clinking, the overall listening experience was the worst I ever had from a smartphone (in now 18 years of smartphone usage).

As it was open air and windy I first thought the this might have influenced the recordings, so I tried it today at home with playing some rock music from my hifi station. I tried it with both recording a video and with audio recorder. Both had the same bad result as my videos from the day before.

I lustened to that recordings with both the internal speakers and with my headphones. So I can confirm that it must be a problem with the sound processing while recording or a hardware defect of the internal microphone. I don’t use the device much for calls, but no one told me the quality of calls would be bad so far.

Could someone perhaps try to record some music by taking a movie clip and also with audio recorder and share their own opinion about the quality of those recordings?

The microphones are optimized for the frequency spectrum of human speech, not for recording a rock concert in hi-fi quality. The second microphone is used to analyze and remove background noise from your surroundings, which explains your observations.

When someone calls me for the first time on the J2, they say I sound crystal clear, as if I were standing right beside them—and it sounds just as clear to me.

Nice progress on voice recording performance.
But a bit sad, as today, phones are used to record many things.
Would be nice being able to deactivate these improvements in benefice of a wider range of uses.

Yes. In fact this way the camera is completely useless for videos. No one does videos just with speech.

In my experience, politicians and people over 70 do this.

But I’m with you, it would indeed be nice, if this kind of feature was disabled (or at least could be disabled) for video recording.

Yeah I noticed the same, recording something at a concert is like going back 15 years in terms of sound quality. But then again, it’s best to just be there and enjoy the concert without a phone anyways

I’m not sure if this issue is related to another one I reported in a different thread, but I can confirm that in the call recordings, the other party’s voice is very quiet and can barely be heard: [JP2026] Call Recording: other person's voice barely audible

To be honest, I haven’t tried recording a video, but if I record audio using the Recorder app, it can be heard clearly.

Maybe this can help, it increases mic gain for recordings.

It is on openrepos, too.
