Using Flash LED instead of Notification LED

Did anyone tried that as 10V doesn’t have it? Maybe crude but still a workaround.
I don’t have a suitable SFOS working phone to try myself.

I don’t know any details f this, but I assume the display itself is utilized for something similar.

Actually, I have an X10V at my disposal; I can send a few text messages and emails and see how Android does without the LED. That gives some insight on the possibilities at least.

Thanks! That’s very nice of you! If part of a display would show notification that would be really great but I didn’t noticed anything like that.

I have to suffer Andy until the first SFOS image. The most annoying Andy bug is that sometimes the call rings but only part of screen is working so the identity of a caller is not visible and sometimes even a call answer button. Luckily it does respond on gesture anyway. Despite being fully updated. On the positive side the battery last almost a week at my usage. Still I miss SFOS for 2 long :frowning:.

I did left SMS notification unchanged but it doesn’t even turn the screen on. Haven’t find a way to change that .
I turned email notification off as it’s too annoying due to huge amount of email so can’t comment that.

It’s a nice idea to utilize flash for notifications, I was thinking about it, too.

But special attention needs to be taken so that the flash is never left enabled for prolonged periods of time. The code must be written very carefully to handle it. Some time ago I was using this, which turned out to be enabling flash in my pocket. One time it was enabled for so long that the whole back of my 10 III was literally hot. I’m not sure if it wasn’t then what caused the technical issues that resulted in mainboard replacement a few months later.

Clearly, there is no proper termal control that would shut down flash when it gets too hot, so the code would need to properly handle it by itself.

Hi @direc85, have you managed to test this? I really miss indications  on 10 V.

I would be interested in the HW aspect of this.

AFAIK at least on some devices, activating the flash activates the whole camera module.
This may include mechanical parts like actuators for aperture, IS or focus (if there are such things).

Are there concerns about wear with these components?

(Also eats power, but probably not much compared to the LED itself.)

Not yet, but I’ll get it done this weekend. Thanks for reminding me

Hm, such HW implementation really sucks (as HW dev I C that way 2 much). I often use flash as light. They really should be separated.
Thanks for a great and interesting insight!

Idea / question:
Since most screens are OLED or AMOLED today can the right or left corner be used as the notification area?

I called and SMS’d my X10V and … nothing :frowning:

Yeah. Sad reality. SFOS will be better .
