Total beginner need help to even get started

Hi
I’m new here on the forum, on Sailfish OS, and on Jolla C2.

The foremost reason why I’m here is that I found this thread:
https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/banking-apps-on-sailfish-os/18438

According to the thread, swedish BankID should work as an Android app on Sailfish OS.
So I bought a Jolla C2 to try it out.

Now I have a Jolla C2, and don’t understand how it works.
I have:

  • successfully turned it on.
  • successfully created a security (pin) code, so I can log in to the phone.
  • successfully taken a photo.
    but thats all.

Is there a guide for totally beginners and noobs?

The phone ask me to activate internet.
Yes, please, how do I do that?

Then I go to settings, find the WiFi-icon, it is called WLAN.
When I click on WLAN I get the message that WLAN-adapter is not available.
Does this mean that I bought a new phone in 2025 without WiFi?

Then I try to add a SIM card so that I can use mobile internet.
The first thing I do after adding a SIM card is to try an call someone.
I get the message “no network”.
I go to Settings > SIM card.
I see that that I have one SIM card in the phone, and it’s from the swedish operator Telenor SE.
But the phone refuses to connect to Telenor.
I should probably do some basic basic things like test the SIM in another phone, test with another SIM in the Jolla phone, call Telenor, etc…
But before I do that, is there something basic that I have missed because this is my first time with Sailfish?

I also see that I have a Bluetooth symbol at the top of the screen on the phone.
But when I go to Settings > Bluetooth, I come to… nothing, a completetly empty page with no text at all. It seems that I’m not even allowed to turn Bluetooth on/off?

As you see I’m a total beginner.
I’m grateful for any advice, and I’m not talking of pointing in the right direction, but so basic things as where to even begin.

Is this the bluetooth page you see?

Well, the little bauble that looks like a turned-off lightbulb is actually a switch.
Tap it to enable BT, and then pull down the menu to scan for devices.

That WLAN message doesn’t sound right. And empty Bluetooth page too. Does reboot changes things?

Did you typed PIN if active on SIM? What generation is set in Mobile network? Is it 4G preferred? Does Telenor have VoLTE?

It’s a bit old, but for very basic usage of the UI there’s this:

Hi nephros.
No, that’s not what I see.
On your pic it says “Bluetooth” twice.
I get an empty screen with no text.
At least I have the white dot in the top left corner so I can back out.

Great!
Now it turned from bad to even worse.
I have turned the device off/on a couple of times.

Now when I turn the device on I come to the page where to enter the security code.
I enter enter my code… and nothing happens.
The phone is stuck on the page with the security code.

I waited 5 minutes, turned the phone off/on, entered the security code again, waited 5 more minutes,… the phone is stuck.

Please advice.

It’s been over 10 years, yet I believe that once you boot Sailfish OS for the very first time you are being suggested to go through a user interface guide. I believe it is called Tutorial. Once you complete this you shall be quite familiar with the system and its gestures.

Tutorial app can be started at any time. It has a blue icon with a human ideogram:

Tutorial icon with a Russian subtitle

That sometimes happens. Not sure but I think it helps sometimes to let it sit at that code screen without entering anything for a minute or so, and then tap in the code.

Hi nephros.
I tried to wait before entering code.
Learned that the phone actually turn itself off if you don’t touch the logon screen for a couple of minutes.
Tried again, not waiting as long as the phone turned off.
Same problem: phone stuck.

Did you buy the device new, from Jolla? Or used?
Can you snap a picture or capture a video of what happens when you enter the code (with another phone, or a camera etc)?

Sounds very much like contact zendesk and send phone back for reflashing

Some phones in the initial batch had this issue.
Would be interessting when and where you got the phone from

Hi xmasjos and pawel.spoon

I bought a new phone last week.
Received it wednesday 02 april directly from Jollaboys Oy,
but i didn’t have time to unbox the phon friday 04 april.

I don’t know how I would be able to get a newer phone than that.

true. but you are experiencing my issues.
and at that time, there was no possibitlity to reflash the phone locally.

Not sure if it helps, but let’s see if this is what you are looking for:

And if you are more of a youtube / video guy, have a look at this.
You will find a lot of videos here round about SailfishOS:

Hi Fuchur84.
I sent the phone back to Jolla for repair/reflash.

There was so many errors on the new phone and I, as a customer, shouldn’t be responsible to fix that.

I’ll be back here as soon as I get the phone back from Jolla.

A C2… yes I can see what you are talking about.
It is promoted as being a “alpha / developer oriented” phone, but yes some of the stuff can even only be fixed by Jolla and I can see why you are sending it back for repair.

Anyway: If it comes back, the videos and introduction page is still going to be there for you.

Best regards
Fuchur

Just wanted to stop by to say that I’m sorry you had such a bad first impression of Sailfish, this would’ve put me off for sure. Hopefully when you get your C2 back the problems will have been fixed by the reflash and you’ll be able to enjoy SFOS working as intended.

Hi catonyourcomputer.

I knew that C2 was a dev phone when I bought it.
And I will use it mostly for testing.
What I really wanna see is if I can run Android banking apps on it. That’s the thing that decide if I can have it as a daily phone or not.

Did you type the code of your sim or of your device to open it?

Does the C2 have a tutorial? If not it is an omission. The tutorial should come automatically after opening the device. I have done it so often that I can dream it.
