Tooter Feedback Thread

I took over from @molan but he’s still dealing with the open repos end of it. deal with harbour and chum…

That’s odd. The translations are packaged, but it may be that the name change (harbour-tooterb → tooterb) causes issues. Investigating.

I’m new to SFOS with the JollaPhone2026, and I’ve been looking for a good Mastodon client. I want to move over, and prefer native apps where they’re available.

Tooterβ is close to be my goto app for Mastodon, but I still end up using something else.

My main grievance is that the buttons to interact are hidden under a long-press. Mastodon has no algorithm, so our interactions are what makes it tick, but Tooterβ makes interacting harder by hiding the controls.

I find that when I’m using Tooterβ, I like, share and comment much less, but liking, sharing and commenting are the lifeblood of the Fediverse.

I become a consumer, not a participant, which is a major issue as I see it.

A minor problem is that every time I drag my finger on the display to scroll, the toot I happen to put my finger on, flashes. At daytime, it’s not much of a problem, but if you’re browsing in semi-darkness, the continuous flashes are annoying.

I’m working on a small function bar under the toots to expose what is now in the menu. Should not be very long …

Thank you very much

Although this is not my experience (I toot, like, quote a lot) and was a bit partial to the context menu approach, a number of people have made the same observation, so:

Announcing ver. 1.4.6. I’ve moved all but the edit/delete methods (still context menus for ‘own posts’) to a line of icons below the post. I think ‘indication’ is a bit iffy, though that’s primarily a bug in the profile page. That is, whether or not you already faved/boosted is not always shown correctly (well, not in the profile view).

I’m also working on the links feature and a number of bugs. Sadly, Chum is stuck, the harbour queue is weeks old and I don’t control the open repo page for tooter :frowning: @molan maybe you can push a release to open repos. Otherwise, you’ll have to build this yoursel :frowning:

Looks awesome @poetaster !!!

Good to know. I think the github release lacks dbus (opening links from external sources) support, but otherwise should all be there …

Were the Norwegian translations ok? I’ve started doing local translation rounds (with textsynth from Fabrice Bellard) to double check, but I had odd issues (also with Fahrplan) although I’ve never changed the translation pipeline …

Yes! I have not found any missing strings.

So there really is none?! That’s really good news! Maybe, after all I’m not an idiot not finding it anywhere.
Definitely, there should be indication for all downloads’ progress and finish, also indication for app installation progress after it has been downloaded.

It’s on the to-do list

That’s great news! In poor coverage area it’s very useful.

Thanks for making the action buttons directly available, it’s amazing how much difference such a small change makes in the UX. And thanks to @seindal for describing it really well.

I ran into two issues for 1.4.6:

  1. I can favorite and boost a post but cannot directly undo those action.
  2. Long pressing on a post gets the timeline stuck.

Yup, still thinking about that one.

Also relates to the first one. In short, the entire toot has a ‘long press’ associated with it, which makes for the flashing, the stuck (context menu has no action but fires). I need to break the areas up and just couldn’t find a good compromise, yet.

I am not a huge friend of the new action buttons. It takes a lot of space and since all are having highlight glow unselected they are very distracting especially on a sequece of short toots.

It is also even larger when booster info is in highlight above next toot. So what about inverting the highlight to only be on when an action button actually have been selected by anyone, preferrably only me?

From a non-doom scrolling perspective I feel the original action menu was better too where numbers are not in your face. The current booster if any together with the toot contents was enough for me. My 2 cents of subjectivity.

I agree. I’ll flip the highlighting.

I’m also not so happy about how busy the interface now looks. I much preferred the calm of content without widgets. I’ll have to give it some more thought.

These have been fixed/adresed in v. 1.4.7 which is currently only up on github.

A minor UI issue.

It is impossible to read the alt text on the image in this toot.
