Swappable is important because most people might still want to remove it easily. I could see myself bringing a keyboard attachment to meetings, and a battery attachment for travelling, for example.
Then I’d love a “multifunction” one as well (USB, card reader, additional screen) but I might not have a context in the everyday for it. Anyway, this brings back the FUN and that’s important.
This. As cool as it would be to switch between at-work and at-home ambiances, and have the display automagically reflect the colour of TOH, I don’t see myself doing it by swapping phone shells. Nor carrying an extra TOH to make sure my phone won’t interrupt a concert or theatre play. For me, that is better accomplished with the existing settings/ambiances/Situations app. (And I would love for ambiances to control more settings/Situations to be part of the OS.)
But as a way to accommodate at least some of those community wishes that went unfulfilled by the J2, I think it’s a good idea. Probably still should take preorders for each suggested TOH, to make sure interest is high enough before committing to produce them.
Re: vote, I picked some options (for the different questions) that are slightly contradictory…
A bigger battery would be nice, others have mentioned Qi charging, which sounds good to me.
I’m tempted by a hardware keyboard, but not sure if a keyboard that fits the phone will be good enough, quality-wise and size-wise.
I think some of the interesting options, like LoRa, will probably be low-volume TOH’s. Maybe those uses are better served by a generic break-out bord and a TOHDK.
One option I think was not mentioned before would be to have a card reader for an open-pgp card or similar, to serve as a hardware key store for email, password manager etc.
The most important thing for me (and for a lot of people) is being able to manage appliances and objects with Android apps via Bluetooth (connected coffee machine, AC, speakers, toys…); unfortunately we cannot do without this nowadays.
Having a very, very good camera is a must-have in this era (capturing memories is essential), or at least having a TOH world-class camera module would be appreciated.
Then I could be able to get rid of my S24 Ultra, especially bought for its camera capabilities for Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Everything else would be a bonus, there are very interesting comunity ideas
A first-hour N9 and Jolla fan and supporter (was in Helsinki at the Jolla Launch Event in 2013),
AirbagTOH – An “airbag” that protects your phone from drops or crashes - A small intelligent “airbag” (can be whatever material) that protects the phone (and especially the screen) from drops and impacts - It keeps your phone intact specially for harsh environments or slippery hands (hard jobs, illnesses, physical problems, etc.)
As I understood, bluetooth and wlan is exclusiv for the os ..or AAS..
Why not putting a second bluetooth chip for AAS into TOH, probably wlan as well. So the built in hardware keeps on being exclusive for sfos. If someone would like / is forced to use Android apps for SLR Camera / drones / lawnmower etc. TOH could be the solution. (yes…of course this would need a proper implementation on the software side…but we were asked for ideas).
A question to @Jolla team: will adding the TOH features lead to a longer development time and may cause some delays of the phone delivery date by the end of H1 2026?!?
Really nice to see a new Jollaphone and also the concept of TOH re-emerge, maybe Jolla can attract a few thousand to ten thousand of users additionally. Would be nice to get new movement and life to the idea of a thid mobile OS. But i think maybe the idea and conept of Sailfish OS and the other half should be overthaught. I mean iOS and Android cemented their positions, so breaking them would mean a lot of work or money to spend. But perhaps Sailfish OS could establish itself as an addition to Android. So with a special phone case you change your phone to a foldable phone, on one side you have your Android phone for stuff that you urgently need like your citybike, your busticket or a smartwatch App, and on your Sailfish OS side you would have the application that need a certain kind of privacy or data security, comprable with banking information on a linux computer. This would create like a user concept, and putting Sailfish OS aside Android, instead of trying to compete. But therefore Sailfish OS would have to mature. The newest Linux kernel, the newest security patches, only encrypted communication and shielding or selective data exchange between Android and SFOS…
For my part, I do not want anything to do with Android and will definitely not buy such a device.
I cannot speak for others, but I have seen several users on this forum who do not even run App Support in order to stay as far away from Android, Google, and data collection as possible.
Hopefully Jolla will offer a TOH that has the same esthetics as the Jolla 1: simple and flat, no bells and whistles. I checked my Jolla 1 and the clicking mechanism still works perfect. No need to use screws. Please also think of the weight, it shouldn’t become unnecessarily heavy. It has been said before: Jolla Boyz could start a patent procedure for TOH.
There are some really great ideas in everything I’ve read!
Thanks to the whole community for the suggestions, and a big thank you to Jolla for bringing back the experience I missed on the J1!
I agree that the theme change is just a minor detail and that if I buy one, it will only be one.
For me, my daily driver needs to serve me every day as it is, with little to no changes and as few accessories as possible.
The important features for me are data security, connectivity security, a headphone jack, and VoWiFi. Qi charging and Android Auto compatibility would be a big plus (since our vehicles are increasingly equipped with it). The headphone jack can indeed be adapted for USB-C, and in either case, a decent DAC would be a bonus.
As long as the phone (calls, texts, emails) gives me access to the SailfishOS community and lets me sync my calendars, it’s perfect!
Oh yes, access to the I3C + 5V DC ports would be perfect for developers with good ideas! (which I unfortunately am not…)
Sorry about the translation; like any good French person, I understand English, but writing it without mistakes is another story…
No direct hardware access for Android apps (which is brillant in the first place ), like you would need e.g. for drones or reflex cameras, where the Android APP esteblishes the access point.
I think the only thing we heard twice in this thread was a TOH airbag.
Not sure why anyone would want his phone broken with a small explosion and rapid gas filling an airbag instead of just letting the phone drop, but hey, at least we are getting somewhere!
Here is also an ancient concept video for an old iPhone that takes it to the next level
With putting aside, i mean a foldable mobile device consisting of two amovible parts, one Android part and one SFOS part, for different situations or also applications. If you don’t want Android, you could also have two SFOS parts working together
I just hope that TOHs will take into account durability. The first thing I do with a new phone is put it into a case. TOHs should either allow for this or, even better, provide additional protection. If TOH wouldn’t allow for protection, I would probably resign from using it.
Integrate a slim ISO/IEC 7816 smart card reader and a smart card (e.g. in ID-1 form factor) into the TOH and connect the smart card reader with the Jolla phone (e.g. via I2C, SPI, USB or similiar)
