Ummm, not in the embedded world where I live. I often have multiple devices on an I2C bus without USB being in the mix.
I think we have here a real deal breaker. TOH could solve to problem with android support Bluetooth . just make TOH to have BT for application supoort , so all sport watches and other devices which are not getting native apos could be used. BT utility TOH.
Fully agree. The chances of hitting 10K may flatten and kill the TOH idea, but the TOH idea given a realistic chance might push the phone sales!
Do not throttle bandwidth. Keep a 400 kbit/s I2C but add a faster bus, possibly RS485 or SPI (or both).

Honestly, I couldn’t careless, the last TOH thing was a total flop, Jolla can call it “pioneering” because nobody came out with it, I wonder why not?,…..either way, it never caught on, was difficult to develop for and sometimes, the cover was detected but still never showed up in Ambiences.
Some of the ringtones were good though, quite professional and then there’s the price for what you got, really too expensive for a piece of coloured plastic and a few tones with a wallpaper for €30. As much as I gripe, I bought a few, the black was nice, but ultimately the poppy red looked the best in my opinion.
At a push, I can think of a few simple ideas, like a built in stand (landscape & portrait) and of course, an IR port, for those with legacy hifi/tv/dvd players not controlled by wifi/bt.

But this is not embedded world as well. Modern phone is essentially a quite powerful ARM computer that already have some USB interfaces. And proposed extensions (camera, keyboard, display, even powerbank) can be easily found with USB interface.
I don’t think you understand my point. I develop applications and libraries for embedded systems. A the other half, for my purposes would be such a thing. If I develop it ONLY for the TOH I could probably focus on using some peripheral bus like USB. BUT, I try to reuse my code. I would be much less likely to build a TOH or code for others if I have to use a subsystem I don’t use anywhere else.
I do also develop drivers for raspberry pi(s) (from the original to 4) where I can and do use other subsystems. But, even there I use I2C for displays since it’s not possible to get ‘usb’ displays in small form factors as are commonly available.
Do you want to port one of your existing device to be used as TOH? No problem, you can use a USB to I²C bridge. But for new TOHs USB provides more flexibility.
I try to keep it simple. I have too many projects to think about glue here, rubber band there. For this particular case, I don’t see the advantage of USB. If the Jolla engineers do, I’m sure they will go that way.
EDIT: just on a whim, I thought I’d take a look at what is available for small LCDs at mouser. Of the available 20+ devices all had 4 wire (spi) and/or 2 wire (i2c) support. Only two had usb support.
Sorry for mundane requests but 3.5mm jack with excellent DAC/Amp would be great. Also, I would really love configurable leds/lights for notifications. I don’t like my phone jingling and buzzing so I often keep it in silent mode but then I forget to check it for hours.. old phones used to have those notification leds that kept blinking when there were new messages and they were great for me. It would be excellent if you could configure them based on applications/contacts so. (If anyone has better solutions for this I’m all ears)
Personally I’m not going to change TOH often or at all. I’d even voice against it if it jeopardise water / dust resistance (I should be at least IP65/IP68).
Otherwise 3,5mm jack would be useful if not part of base design. Maybe wireless charging and FM radio too (these two may combine circuits).

That would be cool. Currently the native Meshtastic client app supports only wifi so would have to figure out how to make this work.
