The Other Half Returns — Community Innovation Program

I just joined the forum, buyer of the first batch. What a fantastic idea. I just shared my first pitch for this TOH. Maybe a bit controversial, but essential if we want to run this device as daily driver. I shared it on mastodon. Mastodon Picture is AI generated. The idea is that even if Google is closing down android, it might prevent us to use essential apps and services to work with play integrity services. So this back cover has a low powered chip that runs android, a eink screen to view the app or details, a separate NFC chip to make payments or other services for example banking or digital ID apps. The android version is stripped down and make only use of the data connection, no GPS tracking or other connections to the phone is possible. The cover can be attached as well to other devices in the future with pogo pins on the front side of the cover to futureproof the design.

I would really like a grippy back, like the pattern from Samsung galaxy s5 and Sandstone like on Oneplus one blended together. Or atleast a sandstone or similar back. In cyan prefearably.

AI generated picture.

I have answered other in the first question, so here is my idea: programmable TV controller, however my provider uses bluetooth/radio connection with setup box instead of IR so this should also be supported

Science Fiction

An Air Bag.

Tiny gas cartouche and wrapped bag, just like in a car. Acceleration sensor to acticate.

“Oh you got a 120EUR hightech rubber bumper case for your phone?
Cool but can you do this?”

throws J2 against the wall

picks up unbroken, airbag-enclosed phone

(needs to buy EUR 500 airbag replacement set, worth it!!!)

Total slop - none of the labels point to anything resembling what the text says.
Overly wishful concept too.

Prio one

Other: Head phone jack!

If you can to do one with an additional battery, DAC with head phone jack and a keyboard, I would probably never need to change it.

Science Fiction

ToH with a battery, GPU and controller - IE turn it into a ARM Steam Deck. If you make the GUI compatible with normal Linux apps the Steam client with FEX could work as soon as next year, thanks to the Steam Frame :smiling_face_with_horns:

I simply want support for UBC-C portreplicators. To be able to dock the phone to keyboard, mouse and screen.

I have 32” 4K screen at work and a 15.6” portable screen when home or travelling.

A DAC would be cool too!

eINK screen could fun and useful

I cannot believe this is happening. I had the N900 and then the first Jolla in 2013.

If this is coming back, I have one bold wish: give us finally a future peoof phone with physical keyboard again!

Secondary wish is indeed a LoRa radio for Reticulum or Meshtastic, that would be so sick!

I’m sold! <3

EXCITING!!!

This is exciting! TOH is a boost for creativity and it’s really courageous that Jolla starts again with it. I liked TOH. I had the original white one with the Jolla 1 and a turqoise one. Liked the ambiances.
I voted for the simple click mechanism because this always worked, but instead a slider would be fine too. A slider wasn’t mentioned. Other brands use screws for opening their phones but I think that screwing isn’t necessary for the TOH.
Radio FM, would that be possible? In that case an antenne would be necessary.

Perhaps a ‘simple’ GameControllerTOH would be interesting and not particularly difficult to pull off. Turn the Jolla Phone (2) into the PlayStation Phone (2).

Wise words. The original TOH was simple and the click mechanism worked well. It never went loose. I mentioned a slider mechanism too. Yet, if the TOH is not heavy, this will not even be necessary. I would warn against a heavy TOH and I think it would be best if Jolla started in a simple way with an NFC chip and an antenna for FM radio, perhaps the possibility to add a keyboard and then slowly adding new features on new OH’s that people can buy. E-ink is nice, it will please many readers for sure, yet this suits a tablet more than a phone.

I second this use case. I use a BT keyboard for long messages (easier typing, arrow keys and copy-paste), and: 1) it is a pity I cannot use the predictive suggestions; 2) I modified /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ to add diacritics to my hardware keyboard layout but on-screen access would still make it easier.

Also I looked for all key combinations and see if anything worked to navigate the Message application (send the message messages, scroll the screen…) nothing did and that was a pity.

This will cost more than E50 !

Wireless Charging please (unless already on the existing phone)

Thank you for the feedback. I might do a revision later. As this is a dream concept I dream big. E ink screens is also part of the top3 at the moment let’s give it a purpose.

Please make it use USB connection. USB is much more universal than I²C, almost anything is available with USB interface.

And please don’t abuse NFC for detecting a TOH, NFC should be used for other things like contactless payments. Use USB for TOH detection.

@frankps yes an attachable dock. 1x HDMI port, audio 3.5.mm jack, 2x USB A en 2 x USB C.

Dreaming big, a m.2 slot for either SSD or AI acceleration (adding NpU) for mind2 support on device.

Seriously, @Jolla should restart the whole communication campaign now. TOH could be a way to gain even more new people and reach the goal.

However, I don’t think the design of hardware accessories should be tied to the sales of the phone, but to pre-order of the accessories themselves, Just like batch 1 “this will only move forward if at least 2000 are pre-ordered”.

OOOH. So, basically I can finally get a kid safe phone. We’re up to 2-3 phones a year (I can no longer do Gigasets where I can replace the parts myself cause you can’t buy the parts anymore). So, if we can solve the ‘re-insert’ bag problem ….
