The most obvious, but a little part of my memory couldn’t help but wonder if we’d see the return of IrDA.
No you won’t
Thought that’s also obvious xd
Something like Heltec T096 strapped to TOH with proper antenna would be neat!
I think a LoRa receiver board inside TOH would be nice for remote sensing of things. The board should be a flexible pcb. I have a small LoRa board as ordinary pcb but this could be redesigned to be flexible. The costs to produce this kind of LoRa-TOH is another thing but it depends on the demand and applications. As first application I would see here remote sensing e.g. bikes, tools, dogs, cats, kids…etc. Of course the other side of the place e.g. bikes, tools, dogs, cats, kids…etc. could have a flexible LoRa+mcu board as transmitter with decent antenna.
Smallest that I know probably is Kiisu Smol smaller version of Kiisu V4 development board and use flexible PCB main issue is that V4 is meant to run Flipper Zero firmware.
I am sorry I could not vote, I am newbie which just ordered new Jolla Phone. However, if I could vote I would love to see high quality e-ink reader with ability to display at least basic colours on the new TOH.
I am very glad that I can support European independent phone manufacturing company
Please continue on your splendid journey!
This looks like powerfull Other Half: https://www.khadas.com/product-page/tea-pro
You could snap that right to my magnetic mount TOH ([cTOH-M] - Clip based TOH with magentic mount - #2 by rgp).
I’ve got another “great” idea too late for community consideration but not too late to share: reducing the amount of stuff you gotta pack for travel with an Electric Razor The Other Half!
Hair all over your phone. Stuck in every whole, gap and grill the phone has. Great indeed!
Wouldn’t an IR Remote Control TOH for your living room require both a LED (sender) and a photo diode (receiver) anyway, to be able to teach-in the commands from the original remote controls? In such a case, the step to IrDA would just be a little one, no? ![]()

It’d probably be easiest to use LIRC – or maybe just the remotes database in that project – and not have to deal with learning. I think Pierogi for the N900 used that approach.
And I’m not sure that there’s much synergy in trying to do both with the same hardware. IrDA and consumer remote IR use different wavelengths of IR light and are modulated differently, too. Also, I don’t think mister_magister is at all interested in IrDA for his TOH idea. I’ll admit that there probably aren’t that many IrDA devices out there still in use compared with the number of home entertainment users that still use their CIR remote.
I’d still love to talk to my old Visor with a new phone just for fun, but I really don’t need to.

Makes sense. But what if your particular remote is not contained in that database?

I didn’t know that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Well, I was just kidding when I mentioned IrDA. ![]()
As for the IR idea for the TOH: Would be great. Its not just old media equipment that works with IR but also a huge amount of HVAC tech that is integrated in buildings and is not going away anytime soon, for example.
In those cases I would ‘just’ go for a smart home option with an IR blaster that sends the commands to the HVAC instead of the phone. Saves you the hassle of making sure there’s nothing in between the phone and the HVAC, and you could pretty easily automate it so you no longer need to think about manually changing the settings. Of course, that’s only in your own home, and you wouldn’t be able to impress your friends by turning their HVAC on with your phone.

@anon48373651 (and the moderators): I think it makes sense to move your recent posts with all the screenshots and photos into a separate thread under The Other Half - Sailfish OS Forum and continue the discussion there.
IMHO, this thread here is merely meant for collecting initial ideas, but your implementation is already advanced enough to warrant its own thread.
Which posts to move?
@filip.k: I would say, all relevant posts starting from this one:
