I see, but for this exact model you sent, the usb port is used by the coil, and it’s not a pass through, so there is not possibility to use a usb cable without unplugging it. Not the best solution.

I clarified that this is a random example to show that there are plug and play solutions as well.
There are thousands of these in the market.

I would love a TOH that would just function as a bumper for the phone. I always (need to) use cases for my phones because I drop them so often.

Having a TOH that just adds a little extra space so the phone can’t fall on its screen would mean less weight, space and enjoying the phone (almost) as it is.

A perfect case for 3D printing, as it does not require any electronics.

It would make sense for #Jolla to provide the basic 3D model as e.g. STEP file of the future TOH so that everyone could print their own TOH’s with own add ons to be shared with the community. Especially with modern resin printers e.g. Formlabs, this would help to make an on individual silicon protector. I would dream of a transparent version of self-made TOH to which I could add flexible LEDs etc. In 2014, I 3D-scanned my TOH of my Jolla JP1 and did my first self-made one. However, this was not very accurate due to lousy 3D-scanners and printers with low resolution at the time. I would expect now a lot better options.

Now that I’ve seen the mockup side by side with j1 I am kinda curious about the TOH (at least the visual part).
On J1 the design of the back cover feels like it’s another part as it should. On j2 the top and bottom parts of the phone are not inside the back cover.
J1 looks like TOH is another part of the phone while on J2 it might look like an extension that can protrude only from the back.

Let me give a bad example to get my point across.
Let’s assume I want to make a huge home speaker as a TOH for my J1 picture something like this:

Here there can be a slot/cutout where J1 can sink halfway through, making it feel like it’s the other half of the phone.
With J2 since TOH will start from the edge of the device:

with the same example J2 will look like it’s floating or glued on top of the speaker.

I am not sure if I managed to get my point across, but maybe we can get more information from Jolla regarding the thinking process behind this design for TOH?
That would make things clear maybe

4 posts were split to a new topic: Android NextPhone

honestly a real usecase would be TOH with 3.5mm AUX jack. That’s what many people are looking for and missing on the new Jolla phone + that would be simple enough to not wholly distract from the core development while still offering value.

Everyone saying eink : what would be your use cases for that?

It is my favourite also - my imagination would be something like the xteink-x4 - which is a tiny ereader that can be snapped to your phone via magnet. Besides reading use cases like showing tickets would come to mind.

This could be either as 2nd half - or standalone on top of the 2nd half. Leeching from jolla battery or havin its own.

Awesome

Would be good to read any text on the einc too: mails, messages, news. And save eyes and energy

This would be a very practical option if the jack was placed above the top edge of the phone , and parallel to it (instead of on the back plane)

This would not increase the phone thickness, but simply add a small “antenna bump” along the top edge. Given the thickness of an X10III ~ 10mm, it is possible to have the connector plane in Z, and the bump might be as small as 6mm high, and 15mm wide.

Good idea.

I would even move the plug to the back so that no rigid parts protrude.

That way, no pressure could be exerted on the plug, for example when the phone is in a pocket or case.

My best usecase for a (color) eink screen is to do navigation in the sun. For instance when doing bike rides.
Screen is easily readable, battery lasts way longer…

Very good use case even with bw eInc

I wish even more eInc TOH now

That may be, there are ways to have a 3.5mm jack attached through USB-C already.

I don’t see the use-case for the TOH in general. Seems like what Philips used to do, great ideas, but lacking in execution or marketing.

Some devices need an usb-adapter with DAC. And if you use powered hub, some devices have problems with host mode initialization…

Me on the other hand I see unlimited use cases.
But for them to happen you need thousands if not millions of devices in the market, third party manufacturers to jump in, and a design that can guarantee compatibility with future models.

If we see TOH realistically in our case (barely 10K devices, no manpower in Jolla, no third party manufacturers, plus the history of every popular device doing something similar and j1 as well), it doesn’t look promising at all.
But ofc I would be happy being wrong

I’m a bit late to the party, but here is my TOH wishlist (features which are most important to me are on top, less important features are at the bottom). Your mileage may vary.

  1. E-Ink Display TOH:
Not only for reading e-books, but also for displaying airplane boarding passes, event tickets, and so on.
And with the privacy switch of the new Jolla Phone configured accordingly, one can show and hide these documents on-the-fly by just flicking this switch.
  2. Additional Battery TOH:
It not only increases the device stamina, but also makes the protruding camera lenses flush with the rest of the back surface.
Bonus points, if the phone can act as a power bank through its USB port to provide energy to external devices. Even more bonus points, if the user can choose to only use this additional battery for the power bank feature (to not end up with a completely emptied phone).
  3. Wireless Charging TOH:
    Self-explanatory.
Ideally combined with the additional battery into one TOH. Bonus points, if it can also act as a source (for charging other devices wirelessly), not just as a sink.
  4. Smartcard Reader TOH:
For those who prefer (or must use) dedicated and removable ICs for payment, authentication, digital signatures, encryption, TAN generation, key storage, and so on.
Bonus points, if it comes with its own hardware keypad and display.
  5. LED Panel TOH:
When more light is required than the small camera flash/LED can provide, e.g. for photo or video shootings.
Bonus points, if it can be dimmed in fine steps, if the colour temperature can be precisely adjusted, or if the hue can be set in a wide range. Even more bonus points, if it comes with an additional battery built in to extend the operation time.
  6. Environmental Sensors TOH:
Temperature, Humidity, Atmospheric pressure, UV light intensity, and so on.
Bonus points, if it additionally has a more sensitive/precise compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, etc. than what is built into the phone itself. Even more bonus points, if it also has a more sensitive GPS/Galileo/… receiver.
  7. IR Transceiver TOH:
One remote control to rule them all. Or to transmit files the old-school way.
Must necessarily be able to both send and receive, so that patterns from the original IR remotes can be taught in.
  8. World Radio TOH:
For receiving and playing not only FM radio, but also stations broadcasting in the short-, medium- and longwave bands.
