It looks like Sony is withdrawing from the Finnish market. What are the effects in regards to the Sailfish hardware?
Most likely none. You can buy from the whole european market.
Regardless of availability the problems related to SFOS will remain the same.
Sony is focusing on online rather than retail shopping, it seems. …in all of Europe.
Hopefully not the first step of completely abandoning smartohone business
I fear it’s the beginning of the end. Together with that news I read that there are problems with Xperia 1 VII too which is taken away from several markets. And if Sony stops witch Smartphones, what will be used for SFOS then?
If Sony cancels Smartphone business, that would be of course an impact. But I think not really the end. There are still options like Fairphone, Volla, Shiftphone, etc. While they will probably not officially offer their phones with SF. Jolla can still declare the builds officially for them (It is not different to the situation with Sony at the moment). Looking at the blob desaster with Xperia 10 IV and V, that would be maybe anyway the better option. Even though I like the Sony Hardware.
Oh, I just meant the probably end of Sony Smartphones, not SFOS. If Sony stops Jolla will need to look for other options if they don’t just want to stay on the Mind 2 project.
Not to forget the Jolla C2 - more Reeder hardware it is
I would say that the future without Sony hardware could be quite interesting when liasing with Reeder and other compliant sfos hardware partners… eventhough I have been very happy with the XA2 and 10III.
I’m still unhappy with the C2 and think about to sell it. 10 III is much better. But Camera and GPS are the two big problems with the SFOS devices to my mind.
Fairphone 6 with SFOS would be my favourite right now.
I wonder if it is not the other way around that Sony withdrawing for the mobile phone market is good for Jolla. Of course a brand withdrawing from market is not good for us consumers at all but perhaps it is time for Jolla to look at alternatives rather than Sony.
Right now Jolla has problems with getting basic support for Xperia IV and V. The question is why? Is the sony HW support/code/binaries just too opaque for Jolla so that it slows down the development? If Jolla must reverse engineer almost everything, that of course has a big impact on the development speed. Are there brands that has much more open support so that Jolla can more quickly add the support?
All I have seen so far, is news about Sony withdrawing from retail markets, but haven’t seen any news about them stopping also online sales in Europe? Can anyone link the news to me if this is the case?
Jolla can’t do anything other than bandaid fixes (or block the broken parts of the system) about the issues caused by Sony’s (broken) blobs. It doesn’t help, if Sony fixes one thing in the next version of blobs, while they break one or two new things at the same time. Based on what I have read on these forums, there still isn’t fully working blobs for Xperia 10 IV or V available.
My understanding is that Sony is the most open with their support for these things. Other manufacturers try to make installing your own stuff harder for you, some manufacturers don’t mind you doing anythign you want with their devices, while Sony not only offers bootloader unlocks, AOSP blobs and what nots for you to play with or build upon, apparently Jolla even has some kind of direct discussion channel with Sony, most likely to give Jolla support, feedback channel and maybe even limited heads up for stuff to come?

So just like I said, I have only seen news about closing the retail channels, but not online sales?
Long overdue is the purchase of Sailfish OS by Sony Mobile and design proper hardware around it for Japanese to start controlling their own information space.
I personally prefer Jolla to keep going independent…
Sony smartphone business strategy appears a bit chaotic as well; and we all know what can happen when big players ingest small companies when we remember Microsoft and MeeGos fate and fade away…
Or Sony killing this crap off so Jolla can focus on a vendor that works.
Not Jolla’s fault, but buying the 10iv, waiting for SFOS, and having this crap in hand is (in hindsight!) the stupidest situation one could get into.
