Some people arguing about SoC manufacturers and privacy I guess

Man, where did you get all of this insecure stuff & craptalking? You either mixed me up with somebody, or I don’t know. Librem 5 is a cool concept, sadly a bit too expensive.

Also. Librem 5 is doing the thing I explained in the post you replied to - it’s called air gapping, and it’s a really nice thing. Sadly only Librem 5 is doing it, but that’s kinda expected sadly. I would say some real ,freaks” (like me) would care about modem being able to be replaced or removed completely…

Man, get yourself a break, drink some melissa tea, touch grass, and maybe you will calm down enough, so that you will not look for insecurities, craptalking…

Where did I even crap talk anything? I’m only critiquing JP2 if anything, and for a good reason - not (at least for now) giving a user freedom to remove SFOS if they would choose so, and to install whatever other OS they would want. If some android derivative, so be it. I’m only using GrapheneOS, because the real mobile GNU Linux is still kinda shaping, and GOS just is more private & secure than any normal android and even AOSP itself.

Yeah, well, you mixed things up, but not by yourself, but while reading my post, and that’s on top of the fact, that I just written the whole post a bit chaotic.

Guys, calm the heck down, probably to 90% of us English is a second language here, so take into consideration, that what we wanted to write in our native language, we than translated to English and things look a bit unclear. I’m doing my best, but I was not being clear enough.

What I was trying to say, is because of the fact that Qualcomm provides all of the software necessary to run other AOSP based Android ROMs (and all the sources) and allows us to unlock bootloader the domino effect of this is it makes Qualcomm SoCs more privacy friendly than Mediatek. I don’t have anything against Mediatek overall, but because of their policies I was not being able to run for example SFOS on Mediatek devices (and believe me, If I could, I would do it - they are just co much cheaper in most cases).

I don’t care about Qualcomm, or Google, but what I care about are results, and the results are simple - I was able to run privacy friendly OSes on Qcm/Tensor, and not on Mediatek.

But that are results of a domino effect of the BL being unlockable - If Mediatek would start to allow this, and would provide sources - then it’s a tie. As I said - it’s an ownership thing, but it has big consequences for privacy sphere.

Now JP2 on the other hand I may not need to run AOSP at all, but I still want them to give me this ability for example in case of them going out of business. You never know, and unlockable bootloader gives you ability to do whatever you want with the hardware you have - you may not be able to to it, but as long as it’s possible, somebody might. Locked bootloader leaves you completely on the grace of manufacturer. That’s what in the long term may end up being forced obsolescence… I’m not saying Jolla would do it, but you never know. They are a for profit company after all.

Look how Jolla is handling the browser thing. A week ago I just went to LineageOS on XA2+ because I needed the web browser to work (no, I don’t have license, I don’t have money to spare on any software now). If XA2+ was SFOS only device with locked bootloader then I guess I could use AAS to run the browser, but it would not remove other problems I have with SFOS and
I would be forced to wait for Jolla to maybe patch something in some future.
I flashed LineageOS and I live. I know it’s not as private as SFOS, but without Gapps with microg anf F-droid it’s a bit better than stock.

It’s same with Windows laptops - Windows itself is crap, but because it’s a typical X86 PC with UEFI, and Linux supports it, then I can wipe the drive and run whatever flavour of Linux I want. I would like for JP2 to be just like that, to just not be closed. Also besides privacy stuff, I don’t really love SFOS UI, Android UI is more practical to me, so that’s why I have big hope for PostmarketOS to take off a bit more, so I could daily drive Plasma Mobile.
