I managed to soak in water my almost new Jolla and after a while It don’t start at all, it is completely dark. After it become soaked I removed the battery and had the phone to dry but it is still completely dead. I don’t see anything in the device manager (windows) when I plug in the USB. Is it anything more I could try??
You should use a professional PCB cleaning.
Edit: I’m sorry for your accident and that I don’t know better option despite being a professional in electronics.
Classic cure is pop it in a bag of rice and wait three days.
But that can still leave traces of water ‘impurities’ like minerals and especially salts. Those can conduct electricity and can influence a PCB in not a good way.
Ok I wait for three days and see what’s happens then
The battery can short circuit which might prevent it from booting up att all.
Could one check the battery in some way ??
I wish I would have much better news for you.
Battery itself should not be an issue in such case.
The problem is PCB as I wrote. In this case more then one PCB.
It can happens that after no action the phone will even start and apear to work ‘normally’ for some time.
But if you want a sure and real and long term solution the PCBs should be professionally cleaned ASAP or replaced. Why ASAP? Because salty remains can damage the PCB or it’s components.
Good luck.
I don’t have directly useful information, but a personal story: I got my Xperia XA2 in contact with water inside a bag, and water apparently entered the SIM card tray. The phone boots but remains unable to make phone calls. I didn’t take it to repair due to the too small residual value of the XA2.
Dunno if #TronicsFix is intrested in trying to repair it? Maybe he does only gaming consoles
…
I had a guy in a phone shop to try to repair it . He said that the water destroyed it completely. I managed to get some from the insurance ! But since I’m developing a fishing app (PikeFight) i definitely like to see a waterproof Jolla !
sad to hear it, i’d cry. thanks for the warning!
now, story time: way back in 2012, right after hurricane sandy in NY, a single drop of seawater got in my N9 while i was taking pictures of the fish in my living room. the phone shut down immediately and started getting warm.
i didn’t have access to my tools, which were under several feet of seawater and some diesel fuel from the oil burner, so i put the phone somewhere it wouldn’t damage much if it caught on fire.
the next day, i swapped to my spare N9 (those were different times) and was gonna just throw away the scary one, when i remembered the photos of the fish. (no sdcards in those dark times)
i took the phone apart, carefully removed the very swollen and explode-y battery, and started removing+testing everything. it was heavily corroded and nothing worked at all. i separated out just the mainboard, and was trying to just get it to turn on. i tried cleaning it with 99% isopropanol, letting it dry out for days, etc. eventually i LITERALLY BOILED the mainboard…and the camera flash activated with no battery, which i thought was wild.
…and that did the trick somehow(!!!). i let it dry, plugged in the spare battery, turned it on, copied off the photos via ssh, thanked the N9 for it’s service, and retired it.
so, my advice to you is: boil your phone??? definitely just do it. i promise it wont explode or burn your house down. i recommend not using the microwave to dry it off tho.
