What happens with this topic on the roadmap … after 10 years?
Is a native SIP client a feature where Sailfish OS fails?
I guess all of us who are traveling around are missing the possibility of cheap calls!
Btw. It was the reason for me to buy a Jolla because of the very good SIP integration in Nokia mobiles.
Thank you for your answers. @attah I’m sorry if I offended you and you feel attacked or bad about my negative tone … but what do you think how I feel about the missing feature since 10 years?
(It’s nothing personal … sorry.)
@meegouser Thank you for your positive reaction. I already use this app since it was available. But this is by far only a temporary solution. It is not working in the background if I get calls to one of my sip accounts. Yes it is the best and only what’s currently available for Sailfish OS now but far away what is expected from an integrated solution which is using a standard communication protocol.
And nevertheless less the question about the topic is open. When do Jolla/Sailfish plan to close the open topic with a usable solution?
And No I do not plan to leave SF for a other OS now or in the next time … but If I read that a fork (AuroraOS) is bringing a solution for that within a short time than I ask myself where the journey is going in the next 10 years.
Sofia SIP still seems to be alive. It can be used with Telepathy Rakia as a telepathy connection manager. Maybe if you load it it will integrate into Sailfish natively. If you get it to work somewhat, maybe you can nerd-snipe someone at Jolla to spend some time on getting it to the finish line?
Hi Simon. thank you for this 1st great step.
So the basics seem to be available and from your comment I read between the lines it is not a no-go task.
With me the problem is that I’m not a SF developer and I also have not the resources and knowledge to do it. (Otherwise I’ll not have written that reminder. And with 60 I’m not that nerd anymore … but thank you for the flowers.)
But I hope that someone is needing this as much as I and is taking this in his hands.
Once again thank you for your research.
You are also from De?
In the past I already had this app from Easybell and the apps of my other two VoIP providers installed. Additional the app for the Fritz.Box router. With a handful Android apps always active working seems to me is not a comfortable solution for receiving calls. And with the current SF today it’ not more comfortable. Especially if it was already working with a native VoIP integration in SF v.2 on my Jolla Phone.
I can’t understand how it can be so difficult to config in the 1st step a solution for receiving calls if there was a working solution present. For me it’s coming up more and more the impression that it is not wanted. Especially if so much people are asking year for year for it.
Why it is not anymore on the roadmap? … for my understanding VoIP this is a core functionality in our days!
It would be nice to see that other Sailfish users will comment with a simple “+” if they also need a VoIP function.
I do not think SIP is that popular these days. I have a VoIP provider and for non business accounts offers a box and android app, no settings for third party devices apps (I suspect the main reason is to avoid providing support). I checked other voip providers and in fact they are more expensive than mobile phone calls. I will put a + with low priority.
@pmelas Thank you fro your answer. You have checked the prices for VoIP and mobile providers. I guess only locally … because I save a big amount of money with my calls in other countries (outside EU).
