Sailfish payment apps Work Group - Europe

Although I only use desktop, bank card and sometimes cash for paying, I think this is a good idea. Why? Because Wero is backed by European banks and because it is rolled out in Europe. A Sailfish app for Wero would be great.
In the future we need more Sailfish versions of European apps.

I am not personally interested in the Working Group, but the following infornation (which I am surprised was not mentioned before) may either make it irrelevant, or at least provide the best place for the W.G. to contact:

Where https://walt.is/ says they are aiming to create a European private tap-to-pay solution, and they mention SailfishOS - although I am not clear if they expect to rely on it’s Android AppSupport (in which case it won’t work, at least not currently). Perhaps @ColeFromWalt could clarify?

This would potentially solve the banking app problem, at least on SFOS AppSupport side (which is where it matters most - as most banks are unlikely to make native SFOS apps).

I assume they refer to Unified Attestation project:

Hi everyone!

(I’m a bit new to how this forum is organized, so I hope I am posting in the right place. Apologies if this is the wrong audience, and if so, please help me by copying and pasting it to the correct working group)

Walt is currently installed on 300’ish phones running Sailfish (based on my last survey), so for the moment, it works fine out of the box. The tap-to-pay functionality is still going through audits, and the most important (and largest) SDK is not yet integrated into the codebase yet, so I cannot say definitely that the full production release will work on Sailfish. I’m testing that SDK now though, I’ve got a Graphene device that I am running all my tests against, but no Sailfish one.

I do intend to continue to build Walt to be compatible with alternative OS’s. Graphene is the largest alternative in Europe, and so it’s where I’ve spent most of my intention and testing, but I absolutely love the vision for Sailfish! So I’m happy to discuss more!

I’m not sure what the best way is to communicate together. I can come back to this forum every week or so but I’m a solo founder and it is an exceedingly busy project to build! (Which is great!)

If you need a development device, please let me know. I don’t have a Jolla Phone (yet) but I can probably spare one of our Xperia 10 II with SFOS installed (including a SFOS license for Android App Support).

Hi Cole,

It’s great to see you active in the forum keeping the community informed about the project.

You are definitely in the right place – we are a small group trying to create a proof of concept and use case document to request a Sailfish OS (or de-Googled Android) version of digital payment apps.

It has been very refreshing reading about Walt, and I am sure that it will set a strong precedent by proving that it is possible to provide a secure and reliable Tap to Pay solution that does not rely on Google Play Integrity. Hopefully, other instant payment solutions (e.g. Wero, Bancomat Pay and Mobile Pay) will adopt a more ā€˜open’ approach by following your lead!

Unfortunately, I don’t have access to a development mobile to lend you. However, I’ll be happy to help with testing once I receive my J2.

Super cool update! Are the ones trying it out with Sailfish running it as a android app? Or is there native version for Sailfish? Sorry if stupid question, I’m not a dev

Sailfish is running android in LXC container and currently the phone NFC isn’t pass-through there. But that can be fixed. I think it would be cool if Walt became the out of the box tap to pay thing for Sailfish  Native always much nicer, but probably could start with the android one

Revolut has some nice AI-assisted response, I guess.

Some are very bullish on Revolut, and I also think it’s great that you’re enabling all kinds of financial transactions across European borders. However, I have decided not to complete my account registration because of the Revolut app’s dependence on Google Play Integrity.

Google Play Integrity allows a large U.S. company to insert itself into online financial transactions where, in my view, it has no inherent role. It reminds me of the old saying that ā€œcheap is expensiveā€. What seems like a convenient solution today may become costly tomorrow if Google changes the terms of the service or decides to discontinue it.

I realize that a frontline support ticket may not be the ideal place to raise a broader strategic point like this. Nevertheless, I believe Revolut has an opportunity to distinguish itself as a truly independent international financial player by embracing open, Europe-based alternatives where they exist. In doing so, it could put a little more ā€œrevolutionā€ back into Revolut.

If possible, please feel free to forward this email to the appropriate team. I’d be happy to answer any questions or share my experiences using mobile financial services outside the Apple/Google duopoly.

Thank you for your time!

Hi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and well-articulated perspective — we genuinely appreciate customers who engage with us on topics beyond day-to-day support.

You raise a valid and interesting point about third-party dependencies in financial services, and we understand why this matters to you, especially from a data sovereignty and long-term strategic standpoint. Your concern about Revolut’s reliance on Google Play Integrity both in terms of independence and future terms of service — is noted and appreciated.

While we’re unable to share specific details about our current technical roadmap or security architecture, I want to assure you that feedback like yours does not go unheard. I will make sure your message is forwarded to the relevant internal team, as you requested.

Revolut is committed to continuously evolving and improving — and perspectives like yours help shape that journey. We’d love to have you as part of the Revolut community someday, and we hope the concerns you’ve raised will be addressed in a way that gives you the confidence to complete your registration.

Thank you again for your time and for believing in what Revolut can become. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions.

Warm regards,
Sophia
Revolut Support Team

I don’t undestand this. As far as I understood it your app needs access to NFC, but it’s an android app so far. Sure, we can install it under Android App Support on our Sailfish devices, but as AAS doesn’t have access to NFC we can’t use it.

I would imagine that currently they are mainly testing other functions of wallet like this and not yet the tap-to-pay function. My understanding is that there still is somekind of auditing process going on and goal is to have everything cleared so that those can begun Q1/2027. But this is only how I intercepted the website.

The current available version of Walt is more like a wallet for QR/Barcode based cards, comparable to adding your membership card of grocery-store X to apple/google wallet. The NFC payment functionality is not released yet.

I also think that’s an important detail for @ColeFromWalt to understand: SailfishOS is not an alternative Android-ROM, it’s a standalone sovereign mobile OS, with Android App Support ā€œjustā€ being an containerised compatibility layer to bridge the gap of missing native apps.

SailfishOS does not support Android Apps because it’s based on Android (like GrapheneOS and co), but because its developer (Jolla) is actively developing and maintaining an dedicated and optional compatibility layer based on containerisation.

While it’s an impressive feed that Jolla is pulling of with AAS, the goal for Walt should be to have an native app at some point - as only then it will work without all the limitations and weirdness coming from Android AppSupport. Like the (currently) missing support for NFC and biometrics.

Well said Pentti
The missing NFC-routing in Android App Support (AAS) in Sailfish OS will render Walt useless for Sailfish during Walt’s launching.
