Say you really want to know … ask it on the GrapheneOS forum or read the docs.
- I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want to know and
- I already looked into it, but they do not mentioned anything specific (even some ppl who tried to use fake device id apps failed because root access was required, of course)
I ask here because the discussion went this way, with ppl commenting about the privacy part of the OS, that’s all. Jesus…
Doesn’t App Support work in a similar manner? It would be interesting to know the differences.
Yes, but the difference is that with SFOS you have a linux “safe spot” which is completely Android and Google GSF free. At least the vital apps (and a lot of other open source apps in the Store and Chum) in SFOS are harmless when it comes to privacy.
There is also Sailjail for native apps.
I was more interested in the Android part, so what would make Graphene inherently better than Sailfish if both are using the same approach? I do not want to dunk on Graphene, it would just be cool to maybe adapt some of their methods if they are somehow superior to what SFOS is doing.
Ah, yes? How can I help? Tech support for Graphene OS, I suppose?
Anyone speaking Macedonian?
Graphene is again spreading FUD about Jolla and Sailfish:
It’s basically just tweet journalism (aka modern tabloid journalism), taking a bit of real news (there’s a new Jolla Phone in the works) and then making the other 2/3 of the article about some guy on Twitter’s strong opinions. No further sources, no fact checking, just “this guy said it’s bad and we’ll stretch his 240 characters across multiple paragraphs”.
GrapheneOS doesn’t really do anything special to protect you from tracking, other than adding a network permission toggle.
Apps can collect the same amount of informations they collect on stock Android, and profiles works in the same way as stock Android, so it isn’t any better in this regard.
Their sandboxing is just standard Android sandboxing and nothing special.
Their Gmscompact feature, which is supposed to confine GApps in an harmless sandbox, doesn’t even work and can’t actually stop GApps from controlling your whole device, unlike what they are still claiming, so they can still track you however they want and do even more nefarious things if they wish to.
GrapheneOS is for the most part just Android with a few toggles to enable or disable certain security features, nothing more.
It isn’t “The private and secure mobile operating system with Android app compatibility”. It is Android, lmao.
In any case, even if their OS in open source, you are still relying on how Android works and on Google’s hardware and closed-source code, which they can’t control.
Do we really need to continue the discussion about how toxic is GrapheneOS?
No, you’re right. I deleted my post. Was just trying to be nice and translate for @unmaintained, but it’s really exhausting and pointless when I think about it.
Thank you, so the old story of trying to fan the flames of division for profit.
I’m sorry but Microsoft had their own OS, not an Android custom rom running on Google devices.
Either way, when they build their own OS and their own hardware we will be voting with our wallets.
Until then for most people here it’s just another Android custom rom for Google hardware (just facts).
And to be completely honest, the “not lead dev anymore” dude has a very big mouth for my personal taste. Bashing everything else in existence for no reason when he just build on top of android?
And on top of that we have to support Google by buying their devices because they can’t build their own OS and hardware?
Thanks but no thanks ![]()
Looks like Bulgarian to me.
I think Macedonian and Bulgarian may be closely related but the article is hosted on a Macedonian domain.
As a dialect form of Bulgarian language it only seems bulgarian. It’s in Macedonian indeed.
“Macedonian”
Off topic for a bit, just to clarify, the official name is “North Macedonian” (ex. Skopjian”) language (an evolution branch from Slavic, actually created by Cyril and Methodius (who were most probably Greeks) in the 9th century), since the actual Macedonian (or language spoken in the region back then) is actually Greek from the ancient, BC, times.
Sorry for being a ball breaker guys.
I’d say Cyril and Methodius created just an alphabet, not a language or dialect.
Roughly a fork of the Greek alphabet adapted for Slavic, open sourced since (to keep with the theme of the thread).
DeepL does a good job of translating this.
The misleading information on security and privacy is indeed quite true, even if I daily drive sailfish os. The homepage of sailfish os is just embarrassing to watch as a cybersecurity researcher. It is advertising things like sandboxing and firewalls and VPNs, which basically any existing OS supports as if it is a unique special security features and given the lack of man power it is almost certain sailfish one would potentially have more 0 day vulnerabilities.
The privacy (and maybe security) from sailfish only lies on the business model, that jolla likely will not sell and profit from my data. This is the key point and which makes me day drive one. Rendering it from a technical view point ….. is…. just……
I mean, for a start, Android is actually a immutable linux system, by this model itself will make things a lot more secure, while sailfish is still struggling to bring back flatpak.
Update: BTW, from a commercial standpoint (given jolla is one), I don’t favor it but I can to a degree understand why one needs over marketing, especially for minor market share projects. https://calyxos.org/ ‘s homepage is simply way more embarrassing than sailfish.
I am not in any way defending or supporting anger, attacking or other behaviors.
But when it comes to trust a project that has a leader this way, I mean, seriously, have you ever heard about a person named Linus Torvalds?
BTW, he actually once made an interesting defense: “For people to invest huge amount of time in opensource developing they have to have passion and believe in what they do, so naturally they get flamed when opinions they deeply believe to be wrong are proposed.” Again, I am not claiming this is correct.
