I cannot believe we’re seriously discussing this AI BS.
Of course you can compare them.
- SFOS works as a daily driver on a few select devices, supported officially
- PMOS does not support physical devices officially but has lots of “community devices” that work somewhat. So far I have not seen one that would work as a daily driver
Don’t get me wrong, I really wish PMOS the best of luck, I think it’s a great project that should reach maturity.
It´s really interesting how a newly announced phone brings so many new users that are at the one hand trying to explain how things have to be done and on the other hand just knowi so little about the OS they are talking about.
Shouldn´t new users normally be exited to dive into a new OS with new ways how things are done. Shouldn´t they be curious about learning new things, and get a little bit more independent from the big tech companies?
I´m no expert in SFOS but a long time user and I really find it annoying to see these endless and useless discussions about things that have been discussed for so many times.
PS: I, for my concern, I love SFOS, like so many others, with all it´s virtues and flaws, highs and lows!
I think it´s a good idea to do it like yusssufff proposed: Link his explanation thread.
And most of them are not even users but AI BS.
Some of them want/expect the same experience they are used to with big tech companies, but without the big tech companies’ data hoarding. They don’t really want SFOS, they want the same old and familiar, but without the downsides. And they are going to hate SFOS, when the phone comes out.
We all want/need/wish something which is often very far from reality. Some of us learn to live with that. Some contribute in a real way towards that. And some just talk.
It’s a choice really.
I didn’t expected that so many people will respond.
I’m using Chum & Storeman, but I have a comparison - GrapheneOS on Pixel 6A (or even LineageOS on XA2+). Of course compared to Android - apps here are getting updates less frequently & GrapheneOS is a hardened AOSP rom, so it cannot be compared to SailfishOS in terms of for example security updates - on GOS I’m getting an OS update every week (you know, Google is doing most of the code AFAIK). But it’s kinda in line with for example Fedora on PC - here I’m getting updates of some kind of packages every 2 days (Flatpak or just system packages).
The thing tho is I just cannot find software I need without the usage of aliendalvik (which I don’t have). On Android I have Thunderbird Mobile - on SailfishOS I have E-mail (in Polish), on Android Signal, Newpipe, Bitwarden… Anyway - a thing like a Localsend would be useful, but it’s not here.
I know no company would just want to compile proprietary software for Sailfish, but we have a ton of Open Source software that is being made for Linux & Android, and it would be nice for this stuff to be able to run natively.
In short - Sailfish should somehow talk with other mobile Linux distros, so that apps would just run on all of them - we don’t need to make small market share an even smaller. Also if apps would work here & there then it would be better for reliability overall. Think about ,mobile Flatpak”.
Anyway.
Nothing irritated me more than just plain outdated web browser without any add-on support even when it’s just Firefox. That hurts the most. Why would you even bother to make it look pretty, when it’s worse in terms of features???
On Android every app is sandboxed & in setting you can tweak every apps permissions, clear cache, etc. On GrapheneOS as bonus I can just remove network access for apps, that require it, but don’t really need it IMO (or I don’t want them to access network - for example my watch Zepp app). I don’t see something like that here - when you install a package it asks for all of the permissions with no way to refuse the ones, that you don’t want to give - only all of them. Makes sense? Or am I missing something?
I’m not using AI - honestly I avoid it as much as I can, because using it is only gonna make me more lazy & stupid, and it’s not exactly great already.
If something is outdated or absent, it’s not the case ,is it for me”, it’s a mobile OS, some stuff is just expected. I just downloaded a lot of packages, and half of that worked & the half of the second half was updated in 2024 or before, so it’s not compatible with other software.
Also.
If I don’t try it, then who will? We need alternatives, so I’m trying it out. Also, besides issues that I mentioned Sailfish is not bad, it’s just behind & I would like to see it catch up (preferably a bit quicker).
I didn’t read all of the forum, just in few posts - kinda wanted to vent all of this thoughts that I had, because XA2+ is just laying on my night stand & it’s doing nothing, because even YT is not usable (because of adds - I know, I can pay for premium, right?)
Also I don’t only say that browser needs to be updated - devs should just stop messing with Firefox UI to make it more Sailfish - reliability is more important then looks, Firefox looks fine on Android, all they should focus on is to get it running on Sailfish, don’t mess with UI (if possible) and stop removing normal Firefox features to make it simple (IMO stupid, because you can do less stuff).
Unless I got everything wrong here, and they needed to make it this way…?
Yes, I was following SailfishOS from the time they were risen from ashes of Meego, after Nokia went to bed with Microslop & trashed it. Imagine this - I never had a chance to own N9 (sadge, it was such a neat phone
), but I had E7 with Symbian Belle & Asha 303 with ui stolen from Meego on Asha Platform or whatever it was.
Nope. I just never really posted anything on forum & only read some threads.
Jolla account is about 5 months old or something, but I only used it do download Sailfish OS build for XA2+
Also F*** AI ![]()
A feedback is always a contribution - just not the one that creates things, but when it’s detailed & accurate enough it can help people that create to shape the thing in just the way it needs to be.
In other words - of course talk is cheaper, but if there is no talk, that it also means there is no one using the software, and we probably should want that.
In software development bug reporting, feature requests & everything matters, not only the code written.
That makes sense, but SFOS would not be a solution here - just other Android ROMs kinda do enough (GrapheneOS is doing it the best IMO).
Exactly - there is a guy that made PMOS somewhat run on XA2+ & I’m thinking about messaging him, but making new devices to run the OS is a PITA - a lot of kernel stuff & messing with the firmware blobs. Sadly not something I have knowledge about.
Also PMOS IMO is also doing few stupid things, because instead of working on to make other software run on their distro, they made another package standard - APK (not to be confused with Android APK, right…?)
Oh, so it’s that bad even with Aliendalvik??? ![]()
Not a newbie. Just not exactly a user due to unavailable hardware. Now I have hardware and I’m trying to use the software. Got it? ![]()
For everyone reading this tread - besides trying to use XA2+ with SailfishOS I’m in a need for a new phone. There are few options (really limited) because I have some requirements - I need to be able to install other OS so unlockable bootloader, fairly compact dimensions (daily use of Px6A, it’s fine, don’t want a bigger phone), easily replaceable battery & if possible - easily repairable.
What options do I have?
Fairphone 6 - easily repairable, no SFOS, microSD slot, 6.3” mediocre SOC
Xperia 10 VII - glued back, not easily repairable, no SFOS, microSD slot/3,5 mm Jack, 6.1”, slow SOC
Pixel 9A - glued back, not easily repairable 6.3”, bigger battery, good SOC, no SFOS but there is GrapheneOS
New Jolla Phone - 6,3”, replaceable battery, 6.36”(?), microSD, SFOS but no android
I read almost the whole tread with updated about new Jolla Phone.
The working browser is even more important here, because I don’t want to spend money on a phone with outdated & not reliable software. I know other people also pointed this out there, so I hope devs are aware.
It’s not bad even with AAS, it’s bad with AAS because the phone is not powerful and Android apps are much more resource intensive than native apps.
Come on, just pay the 24,90eur and get a licence. You’ll get firefox and newpipe and be happy.
If you dont want to pay a penny, how can the devs even work on anything? Work needs money.
You want excellent work done just for the sake of the art?
Pay. Install Android Support. Your needs will get solved.
Ayways. Also read this:
And this:
On SFOS you have Whisperfish (Signal client) and BitSailor (Bitwarden client).
