Answer from a SFOS long time user to newborn critical voices in the forum

This thread is mostly aimed at clarifiying some things for some new forum users that for some time now have been submitting a lot of identical threads to our forum. The typical profile I am answering to is the one of a new user starting with a veeery long post about how SFOS should be impediately improved .

So when someone do that again, we can send the link of the present thread as a reply.

Hi new user! You have found Sailfish and thats very nice.

Now before you start posting your discoveries about exploring the OS, I would like to let you know a few things:

-We (long time users) know that the browser is old and will seem outdated. It is long and hard work to update it, updates will come along the way, be patient. Some community members did help with that, you can too, if you wish to accelerate . Btw its a porting of Gecko engine on QT, pretty unique and cool stuff.

-We know they may seem odd to you but we love the gestures how they are. Most of us do not want a copy of iOS/Android gestures. Btw did you know we had gestures long time ago, waaay before iOS/Android, when they had still only buttons ?

-We also like our UX differences from ios/android, we like the clean interface (no status bar), and for many of us we like the lack of background processes (eg when Fernschreiber’s card is open you get messages, when its closed, phone is back to peaceful silence). We know its different from other OS’s, and many of us like that.

-We know apps ask for permissions. Coming from Android it looks weird. But its connected to a safety implementation (Sailjail) and you can read extensively on the forum about why its like that, many answers have been given already.

-We think they is no crazy money that is going to fall from the sky, or that Sailfish will not become a big player and we do not believe in a path for that. Slow and steady we believe our little boat keeps afloat and thats our pleasure to see it sailing.

-We believe from experience its unlikely that EU or big privacy tech players will join Jolla’s boat. But hey, if you think they should, instead of writing ‘‘Jolla should partner with XYZ’’, please contact the possible partners you envision directly and tell them about Jolla .

-In case you compare SFOS with AOSP and find AOSP much more patent, you can use it, we dont force anyone to stay on our boat .

-We know there are a few stores from native RPM apps and that its a little disorienting at first. The main difference is that they have 3 different types of security layers. Jolla store is vetted by the company. Chum that is vetted in term of compatibility (but not content). And OpenRepos isnt vetted at all, its where anyone can upload anything. You may dislike it, but use each 3 according to the level of security you need hey!

-We know RPM apps are often not on pair with Android apps. Spoiler: Developper of big apps do so on Android/iOS. Just makes sense i guess…

-We know that if you install on Xperia IV and V you will have issues with some things… Pleaaase read the forum first, see the shortcomings by reading the release notes. See the workcaround done by members already. Again IV and V port is just beta yet, and we knooooow that camera isnt working with some blobs and so on.

I am probably forgetting some things… Old time users you can complete my thread with things i missed!

And not all old users may agree with every one of my points of course. Its just to give a sort of short answer to people a little bit spamming the forum these days.

Happy sailing :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

As an old time user, I disagree on us not wanting SFOS to become mainstream, I’d quite like that!

Very cool initiative! I’m wondering if the text shouldn’t be shorter. People tend to not take the time to search, read and understand what they’re doing.

By the way, users with trust level 3 and higher started to write a FAQ with the same purpopse.

Really? Many people like that?

For me personally, I hate it when I don’t receive (maybe important) messages. And I guess most of the users do too?

If you trust important messages to Telegram, then leave it open.

I’m guessing that the point was that we get options with Sailfish OS - you can’t switch off such notifications from iOS/Android that easily (and even when you do, they magically come back somehow).

If an app implements a background service or not is nothing that differentiates SFOS.

(Just for the record, I don’t use Telegram, I meant background notifications in general)

So glad I purchased Xperia 10 iii. I was reading up on the forum doing research before hand. Even the triple camera is fix now.

But it would be great to have background services running for some apps even if they are closed

Is it?!? How, and since when?

Yes also tested today…

If you’re writing about AAS aps you can control that.

It’s not an OS limitation, apps can have background services.
