Sailfish browser did not work anymore with ecosia search enging (openrepos search engine extension - from coderus)

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100%
OS VERSION: 4.5.0.24
HARDWARE: Tablet, (same on fairphone community port)
UI LANGUAGE: German
REGRESSION: Worked on previous versions well - since latest update the ecosia website will check humanity and do this in an endless loop.

DESCRIPTION:

entering an search value will result on a humanity check. Check the square to validate the request will result in an endless loop - the same check appears again.
It’s also possible, that ecosia have updated there search engine in between and the browser or the search engine extension is too old .

PRECONDITIONS:

Installed the search engine from coderus available on opnerepos (Search engines for Sailfish Browser | OpenRepos.net — Community Repository System).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. enter search value on the sailfish browser
  2. check the box to validate humanity

EXPECTED RESULT:

show search results on ecosia

ACTUAL RESULT:

check loop

MODIFICATIONS:

Install search engine extension (Search engines for Sailfish Browser | OpenRepos.net — Community Repository System)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Sounds like you should report it to ecosia, not here.

If you want some technical detail, it happens because they use Cloudflare Browser Integrity Check which doesn’t recognize Sailfish Browser, also it enters some endlessy loop of redirects (maybe because the page uses some API which our browser doesn’t support.

I see this behaviour on many websites nowadays, it could be nice to know if ESR 91 would solve this.

FWIW, this package is not required anymore. Just go to any search site, long-tap on Settings => search.

Of course that doesn’t change the fact that Ecosia thinks SFOS is fishy. Their loss if you ask me, not ours. It’s a Bing frontend.
