I have updated my X10II with working Revolut 10.51.1 from 4.6.0.15 to 5.0.0.61 and …
Revolut app still works after update.
Super
Then I’ll update mine too, but just in case first dd backup
Back in January I complained about this to the French banking ombudsman because I don’t think it’s acceptable for a dominant banking service like Revolut to be forcing people into official Android distribution by refusing to run if Play Protect says you’re not Google enough. I got a response today claiming that Revolut ‘regretfully decline’ to open up their services to other Android OSes (or even implement a decent web service) for ‘security reasons’. Not really progress, but I think we should all be demanding this and forcing official responses.
But now I’m wondering if it’s worth going to the EC for another slap to Google under the Digital Markets act. Under article 5: “The gatekeeper shall not treat more favourably, in ranking and related indexing and crawling, services and products offered by the gatekeeper itself than similar services or products of a third party. The gatekeeper shall apply transparent, fair and non-discriminatory conditions to such ranking.” and it seems to me that Play Protect is doing exactly that, unless they provide any mechanism for alternative Android OSes to be declared secure without Google tying them up with play store constraints (and some of them are demonstrably more secure than Google’s mess of an operating system).
Even if it doesn’t get anyway, it needs to be pointed out to Europe exactly what sort of a strait jacket they’re getting stitched up in. Anyone have any angle on this? Maybe other Android forks are already brewing up a challenge or at least a petition? Personally I think ‘Play Protect’ in its current form should be considered illegal under European law, so much so that I wouldn’t mind waving a placard around Brussels declaring such.

Do not use Revolut, it’s just that simple. Sooner or later with the introduction of digital euro we will end up in the same shit.
No I don’t think it is that simple. Play Protect is designed to force users to use stock firmware on all their devices. It’s a much bigger issue than just not using one service or another. Revolut is an appropriate service to make an example of to illustrate the issue.
It seems you have just enough material to start a petition template that we could use for more services (not only banking) in more countries. Could you post the appoximate complaint text(s) somewhere? Thanks!
That’s a really good idea. Much easier for more people to make some noise with a template or two. I’ll put something together.
How’s this?
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to formally raise concern over the growing reliance on Google’s Play Integrity framework by app developers, especially financial institutions, to restrict access to their services solely to users of Google-certified Android systems or Apple iOS. This practice has the effect of excluding users of lawful, secure, and privacy-respecting alternative operating systems such as SailfishOS, /e/OS, or unbundled AOSP variants, affecting mainly European vendors. These systems are technically capable of running the relevant applications but are denied access because they are excluded from Google’s proprietary certification checks.
This approach reinforces Google’s gatekeeper position in the mobile ecosystem and appears incompatible with its obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In particular, it raises questions under Article 5(2), which prohibits gatekeepers from conditioning access to one core platform service on the use of another; Article 6(7), which requires gatekeepers to ensure interoperability with third-party software and services; and Article 6(12), which concerns fair and non-discriminatory access to core platform functionalities. Google currently provides no public or neutral pathway for alternative operating systems to access Play Integrity APIs, effectively allowing it to control which platforms users and developers can choose.
Claims that this restriction is necessary for security are not technically convincing. The majority of mobile banking fraud results from phishing, identity theft, or social engineering, none of which are prevented by operating system attestation. By conflating certification with security, service providers implement a simplistic and exclusionary model that denies access to users making legitimate, privacy-conscious choices. This reliance on Play Integrity is not only disproportionate but functionally ineffective.
This exclusion has tangible consequences: some services, such as banking apps, no longer offer web access or platform-neutral alternatives. As a result, users are locked into specific vendor-controlled ecosystems and deprived of effective access to essential digital services. As a long-term user of SailfishOS, this is the first time I have had to carry additional phones around to access the services I need.
I respectfully request that your office investigate whether this dependency on Google’s proprietary attestation systems is compliant with the DMA, and whether Google and the developers who rely on these restrictions are acting in a fair, proportionate, and non-discriminatory manner. I would also welcome clarification on whether regulators consider this type of exclusionary design a breach of interoperability principles or digital consumer rights.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I’m currently running Revolut on my old X10ii, which I’ve flashed back to Android 12 and re-locked the bootloader on. The security patch date on it is 1st May 2022. “Security reasons” my arse.
I had to go back to android unfortunately because of revolut . Has there been any improvement regarding this matter? Any solution ?
Revolut used to work ok on my old XA2 reverted to android, now it complains that does not work on devices with custom firmware! My XA2 does not run a custom firmware, just the bootloader lock cannot be re-enabled for that model!
And that is the cause why it is not working.
It’s really too bad. My local bank doesn’t complain about this but revolut does.
After not working since November 2024, Revolut changed something in its latest update. Instead of showing a white page with a message about insecure environment, now it shows a page complaining that my phone is not protected by password or biometrics. This page even has a button to start Android settings of password protection.
Can Alien Dalvik be modified to report to Android apps that the phone is actually protected by password?
I have Jolla C2 phone with MicroG installed.
These are actually good news . Hopefully we can bypass somehow this obstacle
Apparently a pin or screen lock cannot be added to android since version 4.2.0.19 . There is already a bug submitted about this since 2023
There were too many Xiaomi phone owners complaint, see Reddit Revolut rage topics
and it looks like they did one step back.
In any case, I suggest to cancel such hostile services.
After rhe last update, it shows the page complaining that environment is not secure again.
