Repository roundup

In the community news, there always is this section called repository roundup.

Why is that? With the GUI, I only get major and minor release updates. Am I supposed to do updates in the command line to get these updates? Or is this for developers to let them know they can use more modern dependencies?

Also this is about git source code repositories, not package repositories.
