FAQ

How can I search and send GIF's?

To search for and send GIFs from the built-in picker, add your own free, rate-limited API key from KLIPY or GIPHY in WhatsUp’s settings. Receiving GIFs do not require a key.

Can I get banned by using WhatsUp?

Unlike other old applications, bans shouldn’t happen using the new WhatsUp as this app is only linking to your main account, instead of being the main account. At most, you’ll just be unlinked, which means you should be able to link it again.

Everything has been tested for quite some time now, and it should be ok.

Why is WhatsUp not being sandboxed?

WhatsUp currently runs without Sailjail because its native calls, call overlay, media sharing, updater, and background messaging service use several Sailfish integrations. Simply enabling Sailjail could break those features or access to existing data, while the separate background service would still need its own security review.
Hope this will eventually be available once everything is confirmed working while running sandboxed.

What about the privacy of my data?

WhatsUp works as a linked WhatsApp device. Personal messages, media and calls remain end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp and Meta cannot read or hear their content. WhatsApp still receives your account phone number, your connection’s IP address, and the device name/model shown in Linked devices.

Does WhatsUp upload my contacts?

No. WhatsUp does not automatically upload your Sailfish address book. When you open Share contact, it reads your contacts locally to show the picker. If you select a contact and continue, WhatsUp checks that contact’s number with WhatsApp; it sends the contact card to your chosen recipient only when you press Send. Contact syncing by the official WhatsApp app on your main phone is separate.

Is there a secret Private chats list, like in the old Whatsup?

Yes! On WhatsUp’s main screen, tap the tabs in this order: Chats → Chats → Calls → Chats → Calls → Chats → Calls → Calls. Keep each tap within three seconds of the previous one. If your Sailfish phone has a security code or fingerprint set up, you’ll be asked to unlock the Private area.

Private chats and groups disappear from WhatsUp’s ordinary lists, but this is local to WhatsUp on that phone. They remain visible in the official WhatsApp app on your main phone and on other linked devices. The other person won’t know you moved the chat, and the Private area is not separate encryption for your messages.

Can I use Android WhatsApp through AppSupport and WhatsUp on the same phone?

Yes! If the Android WhatsApp app is your primary WhatsApp device, you can link WhatsUp without trying to scan a QR code on the same phone:

  1. In WhatsUp, open Link account , turn off Scan QR code , enter your number with its country code, and tap Get code.
  2. In Android WhatsApp, open Linked devices → Link a device → Link with phone number instead (at the bottom of the screen).
  3. Enter the eight-character code shown in WhatsUp.
Can I turn off Android AppSupport if Android WhatsApp is my primary app and I’m using WhatsUp?

Yes! Once WhatsUp is linked, it connects independently, so you can stop Android AppSupport without unlinking WhatsUp. This also stops Android WhatsApp and your other Android apps until you start AppSupport again.

However, start AppSupport and open your primary Android WhatsApp while online at least once every 14 days. If the primary app remains unused for longer, WhatsApp may log out linked devices, including WhatsUp, and you’ll need to link them again.

Is AI involved in making this project?

Yes. AI has helped substantially with coding, debugging and design. I set the direction, test builds on real Sailfish devices, and decide what goes into each release. Like any other app, it can still have bugs, so constructive reports are welcome.

How can I report a bug?

When reporting a bug, please include your phone model, Sailfish OS and WhatsUp versions, and the steps that caused the problem.

To share a diagnostic log, open Settings → About and tap the version number quickly until you see Debug menu enabled. Then go back to Settings → Debug , turn on Enable logs , reproduce the problem, and tap Share logs. Turn logging off afterward.

Logs are designed to record technical errors and performance details, not message text, media or calls. Personal details are filtered where possible, but no filter is perfect. Please review the log before sharing it, and send it privately rather than posting it publicly on the forum. The exported file stays on your phone unless you choose to share it.

WhatsUp is an independent, unofficial client and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

Is there any connection to that one?

Is there a risk of getting banned by Meta?

Personally: At the moment, I use the official Whatsapp client using the Jolla Phone as main device. I do a full backup over rsync (details here: Phone migration - #21 by moripeluka). I am interested in a native client, as Whatsapp is the only reason for me to run AAS on a daily basis. But I’d want a solution that enables full backup and recovery.

Unlike other old applications, bans shouldn’t happen using the new WhatsUp as this app is only linking to your main account, instead of being the main account. At most, you’ll just be unlinked, which means you should be able to link it again.

Everything has been tested for quite some time now, and it should be ok.

Edit: WhatsUp supports full (encrypted) backup and recovery for WhatsUp itself. So if you take a backup, delete the application, you should be able to restore it back again on WhatsUp. You can even backup the session so you don’t need to relink it (just make sure that the main account is at least being used once in 14 days, this has nothing to do with WhatsUp itself but how Meta makes sure that the main account at least is being active once in 14 days)

@HtheB I’ve installed this app, look fine… just 2 mentions:

  • other languages in the pipeline?
  • WhatsApp has “Communities” (in german “Communitys”) , in WhatsUp these communities are displayed in “Groups”, where the sub-groups of a community sorted in of its last date of messages…

in my example:

Community “self-aid group”
Sub-groups are “announcements”, “photos” etc…

The app worked great on Jolla 26, but with the latest update I can’t send messages. Instead I receive the messages and I can make calls.

Hi! I’m really enjoying WhatsUp so far, it looks great and feels much more native to Sailfish OS than the Android version.

I noticed that the UI is currently English-only. I’m French and I’d be happy to help translate WhatsUp into French if you’re planning to add localization.

Is there already a translation system or repository available for contributors? I’d be glad to help with the French translation. :slightly_smiling_face:

App looks nice but I just get connection refused when trying to connect. Any idea what might be wrong?

Sorry. My mistake. Defender blocked all whatsapp webpages. Now everything seems to work. Thanks for the nice work!

No source code :person_shrugging:

Seems the FUTO keyboard is the only app OP provides source code for, probably because of the License they inherited.

Then don’t use it. :man_shrugging:

Hello HtheB, many thanks- it works fine at 5.1.0.11 on xperia 10iii. I created a big de translation file, but it do not work. Maybe you can use it or give me a tip for the right location to place it. The ts file is also included to generate some other files…
I test it in a folder called translation under the usr/share/harbour-whatsup folder… Also under qml or without folder its not work…

in the old whatsup version I saw yesterday also a folder “lang” with many .ts files. In this files the dir for all qml start with ../qml. I changed the. ts (new file=../qml/… and mak a new ts and placed it also in a folder “translations” but its also not work… I think you have to write the location in your spec and pro file.
Update: now it works!!!

  1. folder translations under /usr/share/harbour-whatsup/
  2. rename the qm file to harbour-whatsup-de.qm
  3. restart the app and vola German

here the last files with alls files from the paths “qml” and also “cover” and “overlay” (10631 lines in thr .ts file now)

You make so many (42) languages in short time and I worked over 1 day only on German  many thanks!

The languages are obviously localized through AI.

However, can you please check if there are things that can be better translated?
I’d suggest you to fix them and I’ll update the package

Thanks for this software.

Wow… the functionality of Communities/Groups is great, now for my level of using WhatsApp/WhatsUp my needs are just right satified :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Thanks for fast implementing languages :star_struck:
