[RELEASE] SaneFish - What Jolla Forgot

@malibu1106 No, as I like to control it myself if there’s an update etc. But they will be available through OpenRepos or my own server. I’ll be adding them to OR every day

@0312birdzhang Did you already updated to the latest Sailfish Auto? Which version are you on if you check the About section?

1.0.0-1, it should be the latest.

@0312birdzhang Please share me the logs for debugging, I’ve sent you a direct message.

Hello, I can’t get the Android Edge Back patch working.

It’s the only patch I have, I have enabled the option to hide the old navigation bar.

It doesn’t work, I tried rebooting but still the same.

Am I missing something ?

Running a J2 with 5.2.0.20

Same as the select-to-copy and middle-mouse-click to paste on Desktop Linux. I like it.

As to your second point, it is but a minor adjustment to workflow. Paste first, then delete the old text.

@sanginteret Is it only that the back button doesn’t go away or doesn’t work entirely? do you see the gestures when trying to swipe from the edges? Does it work as “back” when you swipe from the edge?

Exactly what I thought. My Linux desktop behaves in an identical manner so I don’t find it strange at all.

this isn’t a desktop OS where you have 2 options to paste. I don’t carry a mouse around me to use it on a mobile phone

Thank you for finally releasing this… Been using some of your patches for a few weeks now.

Some are utilitarian, for example the “free edit” option for Gallery, and the one that silences photos and screenshots. Some are pure candy, like the background animation for Home Screen. Enough of them are light enough on resources to always be enabled on my lowly XA2.

All very good stuff, worth trying! Quality is substantially higher than the average from PatchManager, probably the main reason why this app exists in the first place.

In Patch Manager and SaneFish, the patch is enabled.

I have “Show gesture indicator” and “Vibrate” enabled.

With sensitivity and edge activation set to the max, still nothing happens.

I am doing the gesture in the correct zone, as per the app settings.

Doing the gesture gives me the default behavior: the app becomes slightly transparent.

Here is a video:

@sanginteret Advice: Use the screen recorder from SaneFish, it has functions like showing your touch gestures to show exactly where you’re touching in the recording.

Makes live easier to show a better feedback :face_savoring_food:

I’ve sent you a DM for debugging

After having read the title of your post, I was wondering, what Jolla “forgot”, since I don’t actually miss anything.
And then I found out, that it’s not about anything Jolla ‘forgot’, but basically what YOU miss or want to be different.

So, for me, the title is definitely misleading. Maybe you should change it to something, which covers what it is about, actually?

Staying with the facts avoids new users being irritated and faciliates the search for answers.

Don’t you think that to be desirable and helpful?

Thank you for the swift support!

The issue was with my patch manager being broken.

I think for example your gallery-upgrade is very useful for everyone. If I remember correctly the gallery-app is opensource.
I’m not a developer, so a question based on curiosity: what is the reason behind not to make a PR for the official app so it can be integrated into the system and works OOTB?

@mettska because it can take years for it to appear on people’s phones… (waiting to be accepted if it ever will testing it, waiting for it to be implemented, waiting for it to be rolled out etc…)
Since it’s been already 10 years already there’s no change in the app at all, I’d just do it like this I guess

A good strategy is to gather feedback this way and then make a PR.

A good OOTB experience is good for everyone, and less code to maintain in forks and other projects. Doubt very much Jolla would be hostile to improvements; at worst they might say no.

@HtheB this looks interesting, but I can’t say I’m comfortable installing unknown binaries – is it open source/do you have source code available somewhere?

For those of a similar mindset: do note that enabling features will pull other RPMs from (what appears to be HtheB’s own website) htheb.com (e.g. htheb.com/sailfish/sanefish/rpm/sailfish-auto-patcher/sailfish-auto-patcher-1.0.0-1.aarch64.rpm).

I’m sure HtheB is doing a great job, but my security nipple rings buzz with excitement, and that’s usually a bad sign.

it’s to get the patches yes…
SaneFish itself does not contain any patches

The patches will be available through openrepos once I get the time to upload them and put proper descriptions. Adding like 30 of them takes time

Edit: By the way, welcome, since it’s your first post, but I don’t know who you are, but I’m at least known since 2009 back in the Maemo days, even as the moderator of the official Maemo forum

Edit2: Even if I release source, people still complain, see the FUTO Keyboard as an example

Edit3: I don’t understand people complaining without even actually using it… No rpm gets automatically pulled :man_facepalming:t2:

I totally agree that the phrasing “what Jolla forgot” seems a bit misleading. I am already reading this forum almost daily since I got my phone and there are some things that Jolla did not forget about these things, rather it decided not to implement them/implement them differently. So this reads more like “What I think that Jolla forgot in my opinion”.

I did go through the list of your stuff, many of which seem interesting and seem to add some quality-of-life features, even though AI-coded. I’d love to use them while installed directly through the patch manager instead. It’s just less stuff to install on my device altogether for one or more features that I myself think Jolla forgot  (plus I already use other stuff to solve some lacking features, so I’m not sure whether your packages conflict with what I already use).
