Qi charging for 2026 Jolla Phone?

Hi,

Is anyone already working on a Qi charger TOH for the 2026 Jolla Phone? I didnt look much, but it doesnt look all that hard to implement. I’m interested in taking a stab at implementation unless efforts are already ongoing - does anyone know if this is already being worked on?

Didn’t notice that. But the interest seems high. Do note that 9V and 1A are the limits of the pogo pins.

Hi Filip,

I noticed the power restrictions. I’m not well read up on Qi charging (yet) - but IIRC 15W is a common charging power in several chargers and phones. We couldn’t reach that high due to the restrictions you mention.. But I think we should still be able to get a lower power version (5W?) for e.g. charging over night (which incidentally is my primary use-case).

This is the only feature missing from JP26 that my previous phone had and thanks to having it the usb-c port is in great condition after 8 years of use. I tried a few no name qi chargers that connects to the port but they all have an annoying electrical hum that wasnt present on the built in qi charger.

How would you approach sourcing a decent qi charging circuit?

Due to the speed limitations I think maybe a decent approach that might work for some (for sure for me) might be using an existing wireless charging pad with a type c connection.

You can definitely do that right now and have it placed between the phone and the case, but I would really be interested as well in a more elegant solution like a TOH.

The current pogo pin speed might sound ok-ish, but 8 hours of wireless charging this huge battery with 9W feels more like waiting for your EV to charge at night than your phone.

I would be perfectly happy with slow charge Qi ToH. My phone sits in exactly two locations at my home 80% of the time so if those two had wireless charging it would not matter if it is slow.

My initial thought is to use something like a FPC from JLCPCB and to copy a reference circuit from e.g. Microchip (such as AN3532 + a charging coil from Wurth, such as 760308102207). 760308102207 is a bit thick (1.2mm) - but OTOH this seems to be a popular choice and there are reference designs using it.

Not sure how to handle the actual plastic “back-plate” of ToH - perhaps an initial prototype could be 3d-printed.. But I worry about the plastic tabs/hooks holding the plate to the phone. I don’t think the electronics can be made thin enough to just cram this in between the ToH which came with the phone.

I wouldn’t mind it being a screw into place TOH nor 3d printed as I don’t see myself needing any other one…with the silicone case on it wont feel any different in the hand as well!
