So as everyone is undoubtedly aware of by now, the Trump Tariffs are wreaking havoc and sending the world a message that the US can’t be a reliable partner going forward.
I’m trying to find silver linings, and perhaps one of them involves SailfishOS becoming a force to be reckoned with in the coming years, particularly in the EU.
Even as someone from the US, I’d like to see something to seriously challenge the iOS/Android duopoly that has persisted for so long. Maybe Jolla can work out some deals with more hardware vendors or see if the EU can officially fund them as a “homegrown” platform?
Hopefully through Jolla doesn’t forget the dozens of SailfishOS fans here stateside haha. Maybe have a Konami code to use to reveal a US region in the OS?
We would ALL like to see the duopoly challenged, but this takes serious mullah. Jolla do not have the mullah, they only find cash for new Volvo’s and skiing holidays. Nobody wants to fund Jolla, or, Jolla don’t want funding, I can’t be sure which it is. The Jollyboys never communicate their direction, a road map is a thing of the past here.
We are fully aware of what the USA is up to, it dominates the news. I’m sick of hearing the name Trump, it gives me the hump. I’d prefer it if Trump tromped back under the rocked he rocked up from.
Write to Jollyboys directly, tell them what you think, you’ll get no response there either, much like here on the forum, this ALWAYS boils down to funding, yet again. Too many folk have ideas about funding, NONE OF IT, sees the light of day. Grand opportunity?, well at least you are not directing me to some crappy homemade webpage, here’s a recent example from another forum user with great ideas about funding; Moving to SailfishOS
I hope also that duopoly is challenged. And if not challenged at least I would love to see Made in Europe option as good alternative for basic user who are ready to give up some comforts to move away from Apple/Google. This would require better HW (minimum would be mid-range phone 400-500€), better browser as native and a little bit fine tuning with SFOS.
What I have understood without hands on experience with SFOS it should start to be at the point where it is usable for non tech persons. I would think that biggest bugs in SW are fixed during this year at the C2 but I also dreams that they can make true Jolla phone which has better HW. There is other options outside the duopoly but I personally consider SFOS one of few true alternative OS. Hopefully Jolla can clarify their strategy and gain access to some European funding to accelerate the development. It would be amazing if they partner with European HW supplier like Reeder with better HW.
There are companies like light phone that make their (kind meh) HW and apply their os (android version/redesign) on it.
Ie the Light phone iii is not a latest and greatest phone but something to be good it doesn’t have to be as long as it does things right (at least what it promises). Ie look at the nintendo switch. Its not as powerful as its competitors but rips and sells and people are happy.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea for jolla to have something similar done.
Problem is the biggest anti-trump market is still in US, most eu citizens don’t really care if murricans will pay now extra for eu/chinese goods, at least the anti-US/Trump crowd is now more interested in spending in eu vs the gnu crowd that always considered sfos as dirty because not fully foss, they will happily pay for eu-development, even with closed parts, they are not that radical, hell they will probably even consider monthly payments as good as supporting something anti-US on consistent basis, the time is ripe
I see the same change: more people are looking for European alternatives to mail services, messengers, et. Yesterday a technician asked me about grapheneOS and Pinephone. He also plans to use Protonmail. I suggested him this website: european-alternatives.eu.
This site mentions all kinds of alternatives. However what lacks is alternative OS’es.
I would like Jolla to step up now and to offer a real alternative for everyone. Sailfish is worth it. If everything works it’s a pleasure to use it. Just the most beautiful, intuitive OS there is.
Paying for work that other people do for you is not anti-Trump, it’s fair. Most people don’t make their own clothes, they buy them. If a company can guarantee care and solid updates it is only natural to pay for it, somehow.
