As per the title. Please can a more rugged phone case be made more available. I am really, really clumsy because I have coordination issues. I was therefore wondering if a more rugged case like the old otter box with a screen cover be designed and sold?
Yes.
If there is demand and someone will produce it.
And if that someone takes the up challenge of designing an ordering process suitable for Jolla users.
Considering how many devices have been sold (13k?), and the much smaller subset of those owners who would like a rugged case it might be easier finding a popular phone of similar dimensions and adapting one of their cases (eg for the various buttons including the privacy switch) to the Jolla Phone.
I remember failing to find an Otterbox for an Xperia, and even standard cases for the 10III seem quite hard to come by now
.
From this list the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE seems like a close match in terms of dimensions and camera location, but you’d have to look closer for buttons.
I would be interested on this also for having more rounded corners. I remember Jolla 1 breaking 5 pants, and I want to avoid repeating that with Jolla 2026.
As TOH STEP files will be available many people could do such 3D printed case by themselves or by someone they know.
I wonder what would be best material for 3D printing?
I don’t have the skills nor the connections to make the case, unfortunately ![]()
Well, you’re in this community. Maybe your connections are bigger then you think.
The protective cover would be ideally in some flex filament. Unless you know how to cast some skin contact compatible silicone with ideally resin printed cast (or sanded/smoothed filament printed cast).
An alternative backcover rather in a very stiff flexible or some impact resistent harder one (PETG would be suitable but I personally don’t like its feel, it is tough and easy to print though. PLA is too hard and brittle and could deform in the sun. My choice would probably be ASA but that is not the easiest to print) Depends also on the precise shape of the connection points and how fragile they are. Unless one would mount it using modified screws.
I’ve been using wallet-type leather cases with magnetic closures for years. This type of case has proven itself for me and sufficiently protects the entire mobile phone. I would welcome this type of case in the Jolla Shop offer.
For a rugged case where you’d want some shock absorption, you’d want 90A to 95A TPU or similar. Overhangs and the like can be a problem printing TPU, so you’d like want to print with supports and very fine layer heights (we’re talking 0.12mm or lower if possible) to make any trimming you need to do less noticeable.
For everything else, I’d be printing in PETG-CF. It’s basically the only thing I print in these days, including for camera rig parts and other parts that take high stress.
Both for the J2 and Clicks Communicator, my thinking is printing some cases / halves then using some leather scraps I have to make a nice back for it (keeping the frame in the base material).
Thanks for the tips! I need to bookmark your comment for later recall.
Me to!
I’ve always used them on all my phones and all of them is in mint condition.
Yes, I’d love to get a bumper case for the J2.
I have an Otterbox for my current Pixel 6 and it’s been fantastic.
Not looking forward to going back to a smaller case.
