Pebble Index 01 (Dictation Ring)

Hey Folks,

I have pre-ordered the Jolla 2 (1st batch! )

But I have also pre-ordered Pebble’s Index 01 which is different to their smart watches. It is an open source ring which talks to your phone via bluetooth to the Pebble app. It can be configured to transcribe your spoken words to whatever app on your phone ie. a to-do list app or a note taking app or perhaps other options. It also stores your voice recording until you are next within bluetooth range of your phone and then sends it over to your phone.

My understanding is that out of the box, it may not work with Sailfish OS (according to Claude.ai). Does anyone know of anyone who is working on a solution for it?

I have no idea if it’s a good product or not. I have not used any Pebble products before.

You will need the Bluetooth support ( not yet released) and the Index 01 ( not yet released) to know

I do hope so, I have a pre order for the Jolla Phone and a Pebble round :crossed_fingers:

I hope for both of us that they work!

I’ll need to keep a spare android anyway as it is unlikely that my banks’ app will work on SailfishOS (they are not appearing on the list of bank apps which function correctly). So, I’ll just use the Pebble on that phone instead I guess, if I need to.

If the software is open source, it might be possible to create a native SailfishOS app if the official one doesn’t work. Though the Bluetooth support will likely arrive before either the phone or the ring does.

If you want, I can check whether the bank app at least opens on SFOS or whether it immediately complains and doesn’t let you proceed.

Thanks @Rikudou_Sennin

Could you please check Revolut and Bank of Ireland?

Revolut doesn’t work, I know that from experience. It used to long time ago, then it stopped. So I mostly stopped using it day-to-day, only use it occasionally on my Android phone at home when I need to exchange money.

Bank of Ireland lets me get to login screen, so there’s a chance it will work, most often apps simply fail on startup, though I’ve personally seen a banking app that postpones OS checks after you log in (which is the ultimate dick move).

Thanks for checking those! Very kind of you!

I hope the EU (in their drive to move away from U.S. tech) start pushing banks like Revolut to ensure their apps work on European OSs like Sailfish.

Yeh, that really is a dick move. I know that PTSB (another Irish bank) used to do that with unlocked bootloaders. Only after the log in they let you know that it won’t work.

i suggest looping in @abranson as he wrote Rockpool years ago, which I still use to link my Pebble Time to my SFOS phone. it may be we can work from that project to support another pebble device.

edit: also @rubdos as they are hoping to work on the new pebble watches once those show up

I have a strong suspicion that Revolut might work on the new phone. Not sure yet though, we’ll have to wait and see.

I haven’t seen much about that ring - I haven’t ordered one. Not very pleased about the non-replaceable battery, and don’t fancy much a spicy pillow round my finger… But I’ve seen it mentioned in the Android Pebble app and I think the interaction is quite simple. There’ll be some wiring up to do, but I think @rubdos has already played around with voice capture with the older Pebbles. We’ll have to see. I did see a worrying report that BLE-only Pebbles won’t work without a much newer kernel that most current SailfishOS devices have, but the new phone will have a much more recent version.

Indeed. I should probably check whether Add frame-by-frame signal for voice recognision by rubdos · Pull Request #110 · abranson/rockpool · GitHub is up-to-date, but I think that’s indeed what I’ve used. IIRC, the problem over there was that in the existing Dbus API, you couldn’t identify the start of a frame.
