BTW the Gendarmerie can already look back at two decades of running Linux.
That would be a huge step forward on making Europe independent of US big tech.
Next step would be to convince the EU.
Sorry to say… but that would be the sisyfos jobb to perform. I’ve lost my faith years ago, since my (Swedish) government is so US oriented as any one can be. ![]()
This ia definitely very nice news! Go France!
I hope there will be a ripple effect.
If we believe the swiss “La société numérique”, Switzerland spent ~ 1 billion € these 10 last years for Microsoft licenses? I can’t imagine for big countries…

Relying on Big Tech will be a disaster for Europe’s long-term independance as a continent.
I doubt they will spend less with OSS. Maintenance, specific apps, security developments, require skills which are expensive, regardless if OSS or not.
Let’s see if they end up buying from RH instead of MS, or farm the ecosystem, academic programs, etc.
The efficiency record of government spending (particularly French) makes me skeptical, but let’s see. They can be stubborn, they used OS/2 for pretty long when everything else surrendered to MS. If only they could be wise too …
Bu to be clear: it’s the right move, I’m glad they went public about, I hope they steer it right and succeed
Yep, a lot of money for M$ and they’ve been fighting tooth and nail for decades. Glad to see they’re finally - well, not losing, but winning less.
I’m sure there are numbers out there.
But even if you’re right, at least the money stays in the country or at least in the EU. That’s just as good as spending less.
Sorry to disagree, but I think the UK has Sweden beat on that title ![]()
You might be right! As I see it we are competing top three with Norway. ![]()
“I doubt they will spend less with OSS. Maintenance, specific apps, security developments, require skills which are expensive, regardless if OSS or not.”
Doing the maintenance yourself isn’t free but the money you pay will mainly stay in your own economy instead of gong to Microsoft.
Seems a good move, switching to linux.
Saw this: Anthropic developed an AI hacker tool that already has detected vulnerabilities in linux. The tool is not yet launched because ‘it can be dangerous’.
‘Assessing Claude Mythos Preview’s cybersecurity capabilities’
UK is heavily fllowing US tech indeed, but don’t forget The Netherlands: the first where Google placed datacenters, a government who put the whole governmental and civilian admin on MS, who recently sold citizen’s authentification to an American company. Amsterdam admitting a hyperscale for MS. And today: the first country that admits selfdriving Tesla’s on the road.
How we compete in the wrong way.
Sad but true, American corporate creep fully supported by our own governments!
Hooray for Sailfish! A small light at the end of the tunnel….. we just need Macron to make the Jolla Phone 2026 the only authorised mobile now. ![]()

OK… there’s a point. Top four then. ![]()
American data centers are actually one of the largest industries in northern Sweden. And they are funded by Swedish taxpayers…
So how can we stop this shit? You don’t want it, I don’t want it… and I’m pretty sure a majority of European citizens don’t want it.
So how the hell do we go about reconnecting democracy?
And the French Ministry for Education renewed its 4 year contract with Microsoft in march 2025.
Working for the French Ministry of transportation, i Can Say it will take years before all Ministries move to linux.
MANY years. I would say… knowing what EU is about.
This is the right way: slow but inexorable. Glacial grinding is governments greatest strength,
Sad to hear. So which part(s) of the government are switching to Linux? Also, the schools you mentioned, is that for classrooms or for admin as well?
