Official Telegram android: Cannot neither sign-up nor change or add a new phone number

Have somebody managed to change phone number in Telegram using Sailfish?

I have recently side-loaded the official Android application from telegram.org/android (to my friend’s Xperia 10 II with AppSupport). Using my old SIM-card I’m trying to change my phone number by the Android app (having used Fernschreiber, web or Linux-desktop for a couple of years). Unfortunately, I have not received the verification code neither by SMS or a phone call to my new number. The new SIM-card is on my personal mobile, online.

First, Telegram made me to wait for a couple of days because the installation was so recent. Then SMSs just did not arrive. Now they claim that they will call me. After all of that, I even tried to sign up (create an account) with my new SIM-card using the side-loaded official Android app. This results just to a claim that they have sent the code to another Telegram instance on another device… there is no such thing and has never been for this new number.

Telegram support (“Volunteer Support” channel or telegram.org/support form) has not replied during these weeks of my trials.

The new SIM card is Telia Prepaid (Finnish).

Would it be possible that the former owner of the number still has telegram registered with that and… If so, how to escape the deadlock? IIRC there is no SMS if you already have registered devices, just a telwgram message. Hmm…

I had the same problem. I installed Telegram X app and that let me change the number/create a new account.
