I got it to work again. Is there a way to pull information/files off the device to figure out what configuration would trigger it to work for others (and me if a restart causes it all to disappear again)?

X10II has always had AU settings. The AU problem is that it allegedly didn’t have 112 emergency calling support, and so it was being blocked.
NZ does not appear to have followed other countries with requiring the 112 to work. My 2 degrees continues to work on 4G data, but simply won’t make phone calls.
Is it still working in SF, or has it dropped out?
If it has stopped again in SF, then what happens in Android. If you have it working as Android, does it stay working through restarts?
Could you try getprop persist.vendor.somc.cust.modem0 and see if it tells you anything?

I tried once more using the XQ-BT44_Rakuten_JP_62.1.A.1.431 firmware - interestingly, with that firmware, the VoLTE was already provisioned in Android without me needing to use the Pixel VoLTE patch method to enable it - and what i did this time was simply skip flashing a BT52 firmware over top of it (for the Sailfish flasher to be appeased) and rather modified the flashing script to ignore that it had a BT44 firmware installed, so I could flash Sailfish over the provisioned Android firmware. The result was that Sailfish flashed fine, but VoLTE didn’t work at all.
I’ll flash a BT44 firmware and run Android for a bit and simply see whether I have any issues with VoLTE after several restarts (whether it sticks or not).
getprop persist.vendor.somc.cust.modem0 didn’t come up with anything. Previously, before doing all this work (when I was running the original phone firmware), it came up with S159.1, but running those typical commands of creating a folder and dumping a modem.conf file in the S159.1 folder didn’t change anything.
Edit - I flashed the XQ-BT44_Rakuten_JP_62.1.A.1.431 firmware with the modem sin file from the XQ-BT52_Customized_SEA_62.1.A.0.675 firmware. Tested VoLTE on Android, and after two restarts and it continued to worked fine. 3G calls don’t work though (changing preferred network to GSM/WCDMA caused it to have no network (I was hoping that flashing the SEA firmware’s modem file would fix this)). I flashed Sailfish again to see if this “combination” would keep VoLTE enabled - it did on the first boot of Sailfish, but after a reboot it just wouldn’t register again. Running getprop persist.vendor.somc.cust.modem0 came up with nothing again.
I notice that my Samsung (2degrees) is showing 5G at home now. Interesting to know if your BT44 Android is showing 4G or 5G.
Just typing getprop gave me a dump of (all?) properties, but persist.vendor.somc.cust.modem0 was not one of them. Still something to try and see if it contains anything interesting

Nor for me via that particular path
I wondered whether I could take the getprop command, dump the result, do this for when VoLTE is registered and for when it can’t register (after a reboot), and then identify any differences and take the results from when VoLTE was working and use the setprop command to set it to those settings. That didn’t resolve it.
I also used setprop to set modem0 to reference S9999.9 and it didn’t do anything.
None of this is likely how you’re supposed to do it, but I was trying anything.
@mguise if you don’t mind, can you run getprop persist.vendor.somc.cust.modem0 and report what result it gives you?

Hi tn71, the first command had no response, and the second returned ‘No such file or directory’.
But I can make and receive calls and texts with no problems.

Thanks. It kind of helps, I think. I think it means the android firmware I’m using might not be suitable.
Where I’m at now is that I can get VoLTE to register for a “session” (being up until the phone is restarted from what I can tell - testing of sessions at this stage is only for minutes at a time).
After losing VoLTE, I can fix it by flashing a modem sin file using newflasher.
The weird part is that I can’t just reflash the same modem file each time, I end up having to alternating between the XQ-BT52_Customized_SEA_62.1.A.0.675 modem and the XQ-BT44_MVNO_JP_62.1.A.1.431 modem, like it’s allowing a proper settings reset.
Don’t ask me why this works, I really don’t know. This comes from trial and error.
The idea came from flashing Android to my phone, finding that IMS wasn’t registering one time (after flashing the same firmware so many times), completing a factory reset, and then finding that IMS registered without me needing to do anything further.
I’m really hoping someone smarter than me can tell us what’s happening and can get VoLTE going for NZ. I don’t think I can go any further with this as the next step I was going to try would be to explore what’s in the modem files and see if I can figure out what step in the flashing process is triggering a reset of the network information to resolve the issue - but this goes well about my understanding of the world around me.

Current VoLTE solutions for NZ (not perfect)
NOTE - I haven’t researched how different Android versions or blobs or regional versions react to these methods; so, if it doesn’t work, it could be due to mismatches of all three of those things. Method 2 works with simply what you already have on your phone, and therefore doesn’t require trying to find the right combination of files, so might the best method to try first.
0) My currently simplest solution so far (aside from first obtaining a SEA modem):
Flash a SEA modem, reboot. Delete all files in the /data/vendor/radio/ directory, and then reboot again.
1) One method that worked for me to get VoLTE to stick (limited to SIM 2) - a reflash of the firmware (losing all data):
- Flash a SEA firmware via newflasher (if you have
62.0.A.3.109SEA firmware you could try flash this and go straight to flashing Sailfish). - Go to Xperia Flash Tool and flash the
62.0.A.3.109(Android 11) firmware. - Flash Sailfish the normal way (Android 11 binary).
- Boot up Sailfish and flash Android 12 SEA modem image (Modem File 2).

VoLTE registers for SIM 2 (SIM 1 VoLTE doesn’t register), but obviously this means not being able to use the SD Card slot as it’s shared with SIM 2.

2) A method that appears to work for both SIMs and doesn’t require a factory reset (I’m unsure if this method has unexpected negative effects):
Take a SEA modem partition, get an mbn from your network/carrier and dump it over an existing mbn in a random folder (replacing it), and then flash that adjusted modem. I’ve tried other firmware modem partitions (HK, JP, EEA) but they didn’t work, only SEA did. Note: you probably need to make sure the modem file is from the same Android version as what your device has installed - I think the below one is from Android 11.
Here is the modem img that I dumped NZ carriers mbn into: modem_NZ.img
You would copy this to your main home directory then run these commands:

dd if=modem_NZ.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem_a
dd if=modem_NZ.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem_b
sync
Then reboot and cross your fingers (it took a moment for VoLTE to kick in for me after first reboot).
More detail (how i did it):
Get a modem img: this can be gotten from downloading SEA firmware with xperifirm for the X10iii, then taking the modem file that’s in a .sin format and using “unsin” to create a .img file.
Mount it in linux:
mkdir modem
sudo mount -o loop modem.img modem
Copy your mbn over an existing mbn file: I dumped my NZ (Spark) mbn into this folder, overwriting the existing one

Another way to do this if you want to try inject the mbn into your current modem and do everything from your phone: VoLTE on the Xperia 10 III (mark 3) - filling the gaps - #33 by tn71
Note 1: I skipped some typical steps above - I assume you can figure out what’s missing.
Note 2: if you’re flashing the same modem over top, the system won’t update it’s stored modem_configs, so you either need to flash a random one (maybe reboot) and then flash the modified one, or edit the ver_info.txt file to change the version to another value (e.g., at the bottom of the file, from "Version": "1.0" to "Version": "1.01" before unmounting.

3) A temporary solution which doesn’t require a reset of the phone:
Flash the modem partition within Sailfish with the following files (placed in the home directory) and the following commands.
Flash a different modem file each reboot (alternate between the two) to re-establish VoLTE (this is to completely reset any stored settings). Here are the two that I used (taken from xperifirm and using unsin to form the .img files):
Method:
If VoLTE isn’t registering, run (one line at a time):
devel-su
dd if=modem_X-FLASH-ALL-8A63_BT44.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem_a
dd if=modem_X-FLASH-ALL-8A63_BT44.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem_b
sync
Reboot - it should then register.
Next time, if the phone is restarted and VoLTE doesn’t register, flash the other modem file (one line at a time):
devel-su
dd if=modem_X-FLASH-ALL-8A63_BT52.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem_a
dd if=modem_X-FLASH-ALL-8A63_BT52.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/modem_b
sync
Reboot.
If you have a problem with the BT44 modem image then just to flash back to the BT52 image (which means after a reboot it goes –> Flash BT44, reboot, Flash BT52, reboot again, VoLTE works).
The reason for the flashing of different modems is that it triggers a refresh of stored files on the phone which also means removing any “VoLTE locks” that the phone may be introducing - flashing the same modem won’t refresh these files as the phone detects no change.
